Axis Air Forces
By erhard
The other Axis air forces allied with the Nazis or Imperial Japan have rarely received historical analysis. The Italians, Vichy French, Finns, Slovaks, and others in Europe, and the Manchurians and Thais in Asia, supported the efforts of the Luftwaffe or Japanese forces. Some were enthusiastic allies, others only helped out of convenience or national or political interests. The Finns, for example, supported Operation Barbarossa, but stopped at the old Finnish-Russian border, rather than advancing to Leningrad. The author unevenly covers the air forces, sometimes taking a grand historical sweep, at other times concentrating on individual battles, missions, or pilots. Joseph uncritically uses very partisan web sites, and makes some unsupported statements, such as saying the Kawasaki Ki-61 was a copy of a German Heinkel aircraft (it did use the same German-designed engine, and bore a close physical resemblance). He is quite anti-Soviet, but also surprisingly accuses U.S. airmen of terror bombing, and of shooting at Axis pilots who parachuted from stricken aircraft. Joseph discusses many types of aircraft used by these Axis air forces, but includes only a few photo illustrations. This book is of limited value to the historian, and lacks the illustrations and technical details prized by hobbyists. Still, it fills a gap in the record.

He has no idea about the air war over China
By Samuel Hui
I don't think the author has any idea about the air war over China during World War II. Perhaps he doesn't even have a basic understanding of the Second Sino-Japanese War between 1931 and 1945. From his book, he wrote the Imperial Japanese Army as "librators" instead of "aggressors" towards the Chinese people. I really suggest him to read books like "Rape of Nanking" by Iris Chang and "Flyboys" by James Bradley before making any statements like this.
I also don't know where the author got so many materials in details covering the air force of Wang Ching-wei regime? I had researched this topic for years in Chinese, Japanese and English materials, I never knew that the Japanese actually provided any fighter to Nanking regime. Japan planned to turn some older Ki-27 Nate to them, but it was canceled due to the mutual distrust between the Japanese advisors and Chinese pilots. What I know is that only trainers and transport aircrafts were given to Wang's regime. Wang's air force never used advanced fighters like Ki-43 Oscars or bombers Ki-21 Sally.
As far as I know, there is also no combat record of Wang Ching-wei's air force as well. The air war of Axis powers in China was taken by the Japanese Navy/Army Air Force entirely, but not its allies. The Chinese pilots of Wang Ching-wei's air force did not have strong will to fight against the allies as the author described in his book. Many of them had defected to either Chungking or Yenan during the war with their trainers or transport aircrafts. For example, the Communist Party of China got their very first aircraft on Aug. 20, 1945 from Wang Ching-wei regime when a group of its air force personnel decided to fly the personal aircraft of their leader to Yenan.
It is not a good idea to compare Wang Ching-wei's air force with those fighting along with the Luftwaffe in the Eastern Front. It is unacceptable to praise the Japanese invasion against Chinese people as well.

Biased but interesting
By lyndonbrecht
This is a flawed book on an obscure but important subject. The deepest flaw seems to me to be a bias against to Soviets so strong that it gives his book a bit of a pro-Nazi flavor. I find the book has a sense that the various Axis members were engaged in a crusade against the evil empire. The reader will have to decide this for him or herself.
The information may or may not be flawed, but the history the book covers is intriguing. The German/ Italian/ Japanese axis had minor helpers that in total were quite important, as well as some puppet states with nominal forces (such as puppet air forces flying for Japan, with nominal Manchurian or Chinese independence). The substantial minor contributors included Hungary, Rumania, Finland (in a somewhat different manner) as well as Slovakia, Vichy France and loyalist Italian elements (that is, loyal to the Axis after the Facist government collapsed). There is a tendency to forget that the German forces were in their way, also allied forces. The Japanese "allies" seem to have been mostly puppets.
I found the chapter on the Italian air forces to be fascinating. Who knew the Italians made a successful raid on oil installations in the Persian Gulf? The section on Vichy French campaigns I had not read about elsewhere (Madagascar, Dakar, Lebanon/ Syria). There is detail on the minor conflict in the Middle East (German aid to Iraq, through Vichy Syria) I have not seen elsewhere.
Overall, there is lots of technical and other detail. This book has information and narrative that is informative. The bias is rather thick. My 3-stars is because the book is about the only one offering this history.
