It was superbly fun to write and leans heavily towards the old Germanic and Norse mythologies, with a healthy dose of imagination thrown in.�It will feature dark fantasy bits and pieces, there will be brutal battles, we shall see elemental magic and wondrous beasts. There will be twists and betrayal and unexpected resolutions to the hero's problems.�If these things appeal to you, you should definitely try it.

Easily a 6-star review!

Alaric Longward's novel, The Beast of the North: Stories of the Nine Worlds (Thief of Midgard), has no place in Indie publishing. I say this with regret, because I am an Indie author myself. I know how hard Indies work and how remarkably excellent some of our writing is. Alaric doesn't belong here. He belongs in one of the Big 5. He belongs on the top shelf of every bookstore (that is left) in the world. He belongs on an HBO mini-series, right next to Game of Thrones. He's a better writer than I am, by miles, and better than most of the Indie writers I've read over the past two years.

His novel is high fantasy. It follows the life and misadventures of a thief, who is much more than a thief. There are unexpected plot twists and turns that will leave your brain spinning, but they are all logical, justified, and perfectly executed. The book is, quite simply, amazing. There are a few editorial errors, and I am an absolute stickler for at least noticing those, even if I won't ding the book for them. I noticed the errors and SIMPLY DIDN'T CARE.

Yes, the writing is THAT good.

Do yourself a favor. Pick up a coffee or hot chocolate, cuddle someplace out of this blasted cold, and settle in with The Beast of the North. If you love high fantasy, I promise it will be worth your time.

Great dark fantasy

I have read several of author Alaric Longward's books in the past and found them to be very enjoyable reads. I was thrilled to see a new book, and series, released and so enjoyed this one as well. "The Beast of the North" is the story of a land of nine worlds and the instability that lies among them due to power struggles, dark forces, and the like. There are some great characters in this one and intense action. Looking forward to another amazing series from Longward.

An interesting look at the economy, politics, and how we can do better

Robert Reich, while defending the underlying principles of capitalism, argues we can improve upon it, structure it better so rather than it heading for a self-destructive cycle, it can serve a far greater percentage of the population. The key is to look past some of the blinders we're wearing, examine what is really going on (and the myth of the free market) and find ways to strengthen both capitalism and the overwhelming percentage of the population the current skewing of it disenfranchises.

The key points are:

1- There is no such thing as the free market. Actually, this is a point I've been making for a while. There have to be rules. Imagine if I owned a vase shop and in order to get more business I smashed all my competitors' vases. Why not do that? Seems practical. Because we can't just do whatever we choose; we have laws. A credit card company can't allow a business to run a change then decide it's not going to turn over the money. We have laws. So once we acknowledge the market is governed by laws, and that those laws are needed for the market to function, the question becomes one of what those laws should be.
2- Those who praise the "free market" as it stands are those who benefit most from it. That's just human nature.
3- Economic and political power are linked.
4- When the wealthy can influence not just economics but politics, the trust upon which capitalism depends erodes.
5- The notion that people earn what they are worth is a dangrous fallacy.
6- The increasing power of the upper class comes at the expense of the power of the working and middle classes, and the issue is of politics, not economics.
7- The great divide now is not on political party lines, but between the establishment and the rest of the country.
8- We need a countervailing force that can realign the market to distribute income more evenly. (Here as an aside I'll point out that this happened when wages went up during WW II, which many consider a reason we did not go fall back into the Great Depression when the war ended.) It also must develop market rules to counter globalization and disruptive technology. (Here I'll argue it's better to embrace the technology and use it for maximum good. Ned Ludd lost.)

If you're a staunch Democrat, you'll cheer this book. If you're a staunch Republican, you'll curse a blue streak. If you're just curious, and you read this with an eye to analysis, you'll find some things questionable and some of worth and more than enough to decide if you wish to delve further. There certainly is enough here that is worthy of consideration.

A big economics lesson in a small package

Robert B. Reich’s Saving Capitalism is a comprehensive look at how economics and politics combine in the US to produce economic inequality. Reich debunks the myths that the uber-rich perpetuate about the free market, as well as many other misperceptions about economic issues. His main thesis is that it’s not about free market versus big government as a host of conservative politicians and their wealthy backers would have you believe, but about creating a market economy that further enriches the top 1% versus one that is designed to benefit the majority of citizens.
Reich manages to remain mostly apolitical in his book, focusing on the things that people of all political persuasions can do to improve their lives and benefit the country at large—something all too many of our current crop of politicians fail to do.
Saving Capitalism: For the Many, Not the Few by Robert B. Reich/Key Takeaways, Analysis & Review by Instaread is another great introduction to a book that many lay readers might be reluctant to purchase. The overview and analysis of the book’s key takeaways removes much of the mystique, and just might entice people to want to read it. I know it did for me.

The InstaRead version appears to discredit the valuable book "Saving Capitalism"

I found the original book “Saving Capitalism” to be a seminal book, regarding the powerful influence of special interests on Congress, and that the wealthiest own a rapidly growing percentage of the economy. At the same time, the middle class has not significantly improved financially since the 1970’s. This is not healthy for the United States. The optimism for the future is being replaced by concern how we will make a living, for ourselves and our children.

The book is named “Saving Capitalism for the many not the few”.

The book elucidates a spectrum of ways the laws and regulations of the market place have changed, over the years, to favor the top 1 percent, often creating an income redistribution, from the middle class, upwards to the top classes. The power of the book is in the examples, information and clarity of discussion.

Unfortunately, the InstaRead version provides an approximate copy of the conclusions of the book, without any the information supporting these conclusions. For brevity, the conclusions are not written in the way Reich wrote them, and much is lost in subtle ways. Reading the InstaRead version sounds more like the Communist Manifesto, than a brief version of the book. The book is entitled Saving Capitalism, and the book supports capitalism, supports rewarding innovation. The InstaRead version has none of the information or power of the book, and, in my opinion, would promote disregarding the book as liberal propaganda.

Robert Reich notes that our political discourse frequently centers on the debate between free market and big government. Reich points out that this discussion is actually meaningless, since there is no market place, without the rules and regulations created by government. The moneyed interests wish to keep this debate going, while they quietly lobby the government to continue to change the rules of the market to their favor, and they usually get what they want.

Saving Capitalism reminds us that the United States was in a similar situation in 1900, when monopolies concentrated wealth to the top, crushing their competition, creating fabulous wealth for the few, while their workers lived very poorly. Teddy Roosevelt lead the fight to save capitalism back then. The book shows what can be done now to save capitalism again for the many, not the few.

An insightful and inspiration account...

This sensitively researched account of how everyday women in conflict affected societies work to effect positive peace, remains one of my favourite books on this topic. It presents three case studies drawing from women's experiences in Northern Ireland, Israel/Palestine and Bosinia/Hercegovina. These case studies are important because they form part of a small (but growing) body of literature that portrays women's particular views on both war and peace. Also it presents cross-cultural perspectives- Cockburn does not fall into the trap of conflating these women's experiences and views into one "feminine" experience/voice. Instead, under the theme of "women and peace", the author explores the diversity and commonality which forms these women's approaches to peace in societies that often do not include women in formal peace processes. For anyone interested in the efforts of civil society to effect peace and social justice, or anyone with an interest in women's roles in war and peace, this is an excellent book.

About the Author
George Trombley is a professional Japanese interpreter who over the past 16 years has interpreted for corporations such as Microsoft, IBM, NTT DoCoMo, Lucent Technologies, and in countries throughout North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. In addition to Japanese, George has also co-authored the Korean From Zero! series and consulted on Chinese, French, and Spanish language books. Yukari Takenaka moved from Himeji, Japan to the United States, and taught Japanese for over 10 years while co-authoring custom lessons for students that eventually became the basis of the Japanese From Zero! book series. Prior to becoming an author, Yukari worked in Japan as a professional in the medical industry. She continues to write Japanese related materials to support her passion for teaching Japanese.

The best resource for the self-taught student of Japanese.

Japanese from Zero is easily THE best resource for the person who is studying Japanese independently of a class or tutors. While Genki and similar Japanese textbooks have more content (in terms of grammar and vocabulary), JFZ's approach to teaching the information is fresh, easy to remember, and fun. It doesn't bore you with linguistic jargon or give overly complex explanations for grammar rules and definitions, which is extremely important for western learners due to the vast differences in grammatical structure between Latin-based and Altaic languages. The cultural notes are interesting, and the chapters are small enough that one could easily cover a chapter in about 15 minutes. If you have this book, there is no excuse for lack of studying.

Furthermore, JFZ also comes with free audio files, podcasts, games, tests, and a forum online. Mr. Trombley also answers some questions asked by those who are studying from the books through his podcasts. All of these FREE supplements are better than all of the CD/software additions that come with the textbooks I've bought over the years put together.

Other reviewers have mentioned the fact that the book starts out in romaji (the Latin alphabet to represent the Japanese sounds) and gradually shifts into hiragana (one of the Japanese alphabets). I think this approach is a great way to introduce absolute beginners to the text, especially for those who are very busy or are studying many languages at the same time. Busy people and those who are unfamiliar with learning a foreign language may be intimidated by having to learn a totally new alphabet just to start learning words and phrases. For me, I am studying Arabic, Chinese, Lakota, and Japanese all at once, so I have already had to learn the Arabic and Lakota alphabets and memorize many Chinese characters. If I had come to this book without knowing hiragana, there is no way I'd want to study another alphabet before jumping into my textbook.

Another thing I absolutely loved about this textbook was its comparisons between what standard textbooks/courses will teach you (especially phrases) and what JFZ teaches. Previously, I had only studied using Genki and another textbook. Both texts taught that "私の名前は。。。です。” means "my name is...", while JFZ uses "。。。ともうします。”, which also means "my name is..." They differ in that you almost never hear someone respond to "what is your name?" by saying the first phrase. It is much more natural to say the second phrase. These small lessons alone make this book well worth the price, especially compared to other Japanese textbooks.

Wow. I love love love this book. It's very effective.

This book is amazing. Coupled with videos online, the material is properly paced to learn the right things in Japanese without burning you out. The book doesn't milk the simple stuff though. You go through material pretty quickly. I now know all the hiragana and katajana and some kanji. The book also explains grammar in the most amazing way. It just makes sense. I cannot wait to move on to the next book (I'm over halfway). I have studied more because the book makes so much sense. It's kind of addicting... Have fun and totally buy this book. You will not regret it!

Finally, The Japanese 101 book I've been looking for.

I typically hate textbooks, grammar study, and any deliberate study of charts, conjugations, and all things grammar. This posed a big problem for my studies of japanese where the grammar structure is so different from english, you really can't pick up the language by by learning vocabulary.

I don't know what is more confusing to the beginner Japanese student: The actual language or trying to navigate the endless maze of books, websites, and resources that are marketed to us. Promises of clear, detailed, easy to grasp explanations typically fall short. No matter which way you slice it books always end up being more explanation and grammar terms than simple examples. After 6 months of study, I can't tell how many grammar books I have thrown in frustration, swearing that I'll never understand this language. Japanese from zero has proved me wrong.

This book finally gets it right. It very simply and progressively introduces a new concept, gives intuitive explanations from an english speaking point of view, followed by examples. Each chapter slowly builds up the structures and before you know it you are putting together more complicated sentences. This is the book that finally gave me the confidence that I will reach fluency and help clear up so much unclear frustration. Japanese is very different but it really doesn't have to be as difficult as it is made out to be. I highly recommend using this book in combination with the Japanese from zero website and youtube channel: The teacher does a great job of walking you through the new patterns of Japanese and is very entertaining.

This book is exactly what I was looking for!

This book is seriously EXACTLY what I was looking for! You can tell (and I believe the other reviewers will agree) that the author really puts effort into making himself understood and he explains his techniques brilliantly with allusions and whatnot. You can tell he cares! He also puts good sources at the end of the book. I first learned about penny stocks from Penny Stocks for Dummies (which I recommend for those who know next to nothing about stocks/penny stocks) but I was looking for something a little more complex. Something a little more technical. That is exactly what this book provided me with. Mr. Bronner, if you happen to stumble across this review, you are a terrific author/teacher and deserve more attention! I wish you much luck on your journey as an author. Also, when is your next book coming out? I'll be looking forward to it! I'm gonna read "Penny Stock Manipulation" next, which also looks intriguing... To everyone else, pick this one up!

Getting started with penny stocks

I really don't have the funds or the know-how right now to get involved in the "big market" and have been curious about penny stocks for quite a few years. While I know that some of them can be very risky, I have also heard that there can be some good deals if you know where to look. I found author Joseph Bronner's "Penny Stocks" to be highly educational on this subject and very well written. This easy to follow guide explains about this market and how to actually make some money here with his tried and true strategies. A great guide to getting started with penny stocks.
