About the Author
Professor Wolfgang DemtrAder studied physics and mathematics, and received his PhD degree in 1961 from the University of Bonn. After working as an assistant professor and researcher at the University of Freiburg until 1967, he went as a visiting fellow to JILA in Boulder, Colorado. In 1970 he accepted a post as full professor at the newly founded University of Kaiserslautern, Germany, where he still works. Professor DemtrAder was awarded the Max-Born-Award of the English and German Physical Society in 1995. He is the author of about 150 scientific papers and several books.

I had to purchase this for a introductory sociology course. Although the substance of the book is interesting, it was a rather difficult read. I had to look things over several times and ask for clarifications from the professor before I really understood. I believe that taking a sociology course provided me with the knowledge to appreciate the material that I otherwise would not have fully grasped on my own.

Masterpiece

This book is so perfect in what it proposes to be that I feel sorry to not have bought it before. It gives you a wonderfull view of the history of Special Effects and have deep information, that I never found in other books on how they did in the past and how they do today.

I am desesperately waiting for a new version of the book and I hope they do a bigger book now. There are more good information that I would like to see in this book.

I believe the cover doesn't help because it shows a pinacle of visual effects, but what make this book shines is the Special Effects part.

I also would love to have this book in a digital format so I could see the pictures in bigger sizes. I can imagine how wonderfull would be if a digital version of the book, with links to the films and sniplets of scenes.

Anyway, even today, in 2013, this book is a must buy for everyone that loves cinema and respect is as the ultimate art.

Exceptional book for those who are brand new to the field

I bought this book during my freshman year of college for an Intro class, and I still have it today. Not a bad book at all for someone who's very interested in learning historical techniques behind visual/special effects. Some of the sections go into great detail on the most popular effects techniques, and I learned a lot from this book.

So I bought this as I was teaching myself vfx. After having worked at Weta for 5 years, I can say this is a pretty cool book! It's getting old, but has great info and behind the scenes stuff. I'll be hanging onto it for a long time! Great quality and lots of pictures :)

Excellent review of work changes under "fast capitalism."

The book is a thoughtful, balanced and readable review of the changes taking place in the workplace under "fast capitalism." It provides much-needed balance to the uncritical promotion of change by promoters of "fast capitalism" like Peter Drucker and Tom Peters. Two excellent case studies show some limitations to the ways in which change is being promoted and underpinned.

Efficient textbook or self-study guide

An efficient self-teaching guide to mastering academic writing. It focuses on the researched essay, devoting one chapter each to an essay of a different type (or purpose): comparison-and-contrast, cause-and-effect, argumentative, classification, and reaction. Each of these essay examples is analyzed with respect to rhetorical focus and the presentation of critical thinking. Thus the student is presented with a good example of five major types of essay and is led through a nuts-and-bolts analysis of what makes it effective. Embedded within the instruction are examples which help the student to recognize bad grammar and clumsy style. This "remedial" material is based on the actual subject matter of the essays, making it easy and rewarding for the student. Learning efficiency is also bolstered by the authors' choice of essay topics, which include art appreciation, psychology, law & ethics, career planning, and literary analysis. Thus Effective Academic Writing can be used as a multi-purpose tool, applicable to junior- and regular colleges, ESL, adoptable as a textbook but equally useful for self-study and career enhancement, or as a guide to preparing a college-entrance essay.

If you flip open marketing expert Peter Fisk's remarkable innovation handbook, you'll find something useful on every page. After introducing Leonardo da Vinci as a model and enumerating his qualities, Fisk offers a choppy but interesting host of lenses, images, options, ideas, metaphors, models and approaches, all to provide new perspectives based on a synthesis of sound concepts that you might not think of combining. getAbstract recommends Fisk's manual to anyone seeking a guide to innovation that is immediately accessible and applicable. Though the cover shows no subhead, one appears on the title page promising "An Innovation Guide for Business Leaders, Border Crossers and Game Changers." And that is what Fisk provides.
