When cracking is observed in a building the most common reaction is that it must be the foundations and that it must be serious.

Many surveyors are nervous about diagnosing cracks. This is understandable, as the interpretation of cracks can be difficult to teach, with university courses providing little or no time for field experience. Yet by understanding one straightforward principle the majority of cracks can be diagnosed in just a few minutes. Linking this with a good knowledge of construction techniques, the factors that distort cracking patterns and the key features of common causes of cracking, almost all cracks can be diagnosed quickly and with confidence.

Practical Guide to Diagnosing Structural Movement in Buildings provides a methodology by which cracks and movement in buildings can be diagnosed. Written in four parts, part one describes the key principles of movement and cracking. Parts two and three describe the main features of common forms of movement and the associated crack patterns. About the Author
Malcolm Holland, BSc(Hons) MRICS, started his career as a land surveyor in the Royal Engineers before leaving the Army to return to higher education. He gained a degree in Building Surveying and then qualified as a Chartered Surveyor in 1988. Since then he has worked predominantly in private practice and mostly in the field of residential surveying. During the mid 1990s he spent 4 years as a senior lecturer at DeMontfort University teaching building construction and pathology to general practice surveying students. He returned to private practice in 1997 and continues to practice as a residential building surveyor.

From experience, I know this is correct

The method of eating in this book works. Very quickly too.

I am NOT a patient of the doctor, but I have been following the method of eating in this book several months before this book came out. I arrived at this diet by studying research on the gut microbiome and figuring out how to implement that research into my own eating. The amazing thing to me is that the doctor's recommended diet and conclusions are similar to my own. And what he has observed in his patients is exactly what I have observed of myself.

I have spontaneously lost a lot of weight and six inches off my waistline. My lipids are great, but were statin worthy before I started. I have lost hypoglycemia, allergies of all types, and simply feel great. I felt I was a very healthy person before I started, but the list of improved things is very long.

I say "spontaneously" because, as the doctor states, this is not a diet requiring calorie counting. It does not require restricting any particular macronutrient. You eat what you normally eat (minus bad foods listed by the doctor, but this was not a big deal for me) but add gut friendly foods. The emphasis is on inulin, found in garlic, onions, asparagus, and such. I'll add dandelion greens because I enjoy them and they are a better source than a few of the others mentioned. Also probiotic foods. I will also point out that some Korean markets have leek kimchi and scallion kimchi, so one can get a dose of inulin along with the probiotics. Plus authentic Korean kimchi to me is better than the health-store "kimchi".

I found that I was losing weight, about 2 lbs per week. Without doing anything other than making sure I got plenty of gut friendly foods. Then my tastes started changing. I'd get out of the blue cravings. One was for raw honey (sorry doc, I know it is on your bad list, but my gut wanted it). I've never eaten it raw since an allergic reaction some time ago. One tablespoon, and that's what I needed. Other similar cravings. Soon I learned to listen to my gut and let it tell me what I needed. It's almost a dialogue between my brain and my gut. I eat what I want, but to be frank what I want is good, healthy food.

Now my weight is stable at a healthy level. I eat what I want. But what I want is different from before. I want onions. I want garlic. I want all the good stuff that feeds the gut. The doctor says at various stages you can deviate 90% or 70% from the diet. The funny thing to me is these deviation numbers also seem automatic - I'd say they are about right, but the gut stops you from going to far. It's not something I have to think about.

I try to get as much of my fiber as possible from real food. But there are some advantages to supplementation as well. I was previously hypoglycemic, but my symptoms did not fully disappear until I started taking glucomannan. Also, for those of us with cholesterol issues, there are several fibers of benefit. These additional fibers are not in the book.

I end with a quotes from the book that perfectly reflects my experience:

"Restoring their intestinal health and balancing the microbiome frees them from cravings and compulsions while putting them in touch with what their body needs and wants. It's almost as if they have awakened their 'inner nutritionist', instinctively seeking foods they need to remain healthy, energized, and fit."

Works But With Long Term Benefits

The microbiome Diet, though very science sounding, is actually a diet uniquely suited for those who have tried various diets in the past and never found results. It's a new approach built upon the principle that the obesity problem many are facing is due to the digestive system being compromised by the foods we are eating - leading to leaky gut, inflammation, increased hunger and cravings, and other health problems ranging from soreness to lack of concentration. The way our food is processed in the body is greatly aided and abetted by microbiomes - bacteria in the gut. When there is an imbalance (lack of certain bacteria or too many bad ones), our health suffers and we gain weight.

The diet is based around "Four Rs": 1) Remove the unhealthy bacteria and the foods that unbalance the microbiome; 2) Replace the digestive enzymes that you need for optimal digestion; 3) Reinoculate with probiotics (intestinal bacteria) and prebiotics 9foods and supplements that nourish this bacteria and keep it healthy); 4) Repair the lining of your intestinal walls, which have likely become permeable and are releasing partially digested food into the bloodstream and causing major problems like inflammation.

The diet has three phases. In the first, you avoid sugar, eggs, soy, gluten, and dairy (as well as all packaged/artificial foods). This is the heart of the four Rs above. Phase 2 is the metabolic boost. You eat a wider range of foods and introduce some items like milk and eggs. Phase 3 is about maintaining healthy weight loss. You eat about 70% of the phase 2 foods and then some 'goodies' in between.

The diet is set up to cleanse the system of the bad stuff, heal your gut, and in the process wean you off the items that cause the insatiable cravings and hunger. At the same time, improve all over health. Recipes and a meal plan are given at the beginning, as well as a shopping list for each stage. Recipes are set up to be made quickly and easily using fairly staple foods. Chicken, salads, seafood, etc.

For the recipes, I had a few problems with the directions (e.g., I have no idea what I'm doing when I'm told to "deglaze the vinegar"). As well, with a few I wasn't really sure what was going on (e.g., I'm told to saute garlic and then add wet Kale and let it simmer - but I'm not quite sure how wet the kale should be?). But on the whole, I was able to follow the recipes and they satisfied me - I wasn't left hungry. There were no surprises here - a lot of the recipes are superfood centered, so you'll see similar iterations in other cookbooks that focus on organic and superfoods like cruciferous vegetables and legumes). I wish there was more information about substitutions (e.g., I can't eat seafood and when given an ingredient like apple cider vinegar, I'd like to know if malt cider is an acceptable alternative.)

Although there weren't a lot of exotic ingredients (I wasn't able to get jerusalem artichoke or kimchee at my local store), there are resources on where to get many ingredients. One big downside for me was tracking down the huge amount of supplements, which was 7-10 pills a day and some powders. Be prepared - it is a heavy cost up front (perhaps not as heavy in the long run for good health, though). If you are outside of the US, this will be a hard diet to follow.

Recipe examples include: minted fruit salad with brazil nuts, rich vegetable soup, jerk cornish game hen, mussels steamed in beer, gazpacho smoothie, stuffed mushrooms, and snacks such as baked kale chips.

I've tried the diet for 3 weeks now and the cravings really do go down. I haven't received all the supplements in the mail or tracked down all the ingredients as of the time of writing this, though, and will update later. But the weight is coming off.

If buying the Kindle version, the formatting is a bit harder to read than with the book version, so I recommend the physical copy.

See update below. They give cows and chickens anti-biotics to make them fat. What do you think it does to us?

Ok. I give the writing 3 stars and it probably could have been a simple 10 page essay, BUT let me tell you a few things. I have been on the program for 2 weeks and who knows I may be stuffing my face with gelato tomorrow but right now I feel GOOD! I'm down 12 pounds (I have a lot to lose, you probably won't lose as much). I don't have cravings. I'm sleeping better. I have more energy. I've been out to dinner and to a birthday party and didn't even feel tempted. My memory and brain function are improving and the rosacea on my face is subsiding. There is such a noticeable difference that my husband and my sister-in-law want to try the program too. The strictest "diet" portion of the book only lasts 3 weeks and then you switch to 90% compliance and 10% indulgence. After 7 weeks total you're start 70% compliance and 30% indulgence (within reason of course). Plus you can have avocado, shrimp and butter in the FIRST part of the program. Not bad at all. I will update with my progress in a few weeks. Even if only half of what the doctor says is true it will be a mini-miracle. Think good thoughts for me!

Update: I have successfully completed Phase 1 without cravings or cheating! I am now moving into Phase 2. I started this July 7, 2014 and as of August 3, 2014 I am down 19.8 pounds. Everyone keeps complimenting me on my complexion and my mood is wonderful.

Update: OK. So the transition did not go well. I had organic corn tortillas and it was like a switch in my head went off and the cravings came back like crazy. I gained back 8 of the pounds I lost and my mood got worse and the Rosacea started coming back. I am now trying to work my way back into the first phase and I am going to stay there for much longer since my problems are so significant and not have any corn when transitioning (I may not even try to transition if it's going as well as before.) I'm not going to lie, it made me really sad because I was doing so WELL and feeling so happy. But I am doing better. However, I can really tell when I eat the foods that impact my gut and I have been doing better with that.

Update(11/3/2014): I found out I was not taking enough pro-biotic. I ordered the Gut Pro from Organic 3 recommended in the book but I ordered the capsules which have only 5 billion micros and I was supposed to be taking a minimum of 50 billion. I ordered the powder and I'm hoping that will be more helpful and I am going to try again.

Fractured fragmented fractals of fiction... or is it?

My experience with this book is as having awakend inside the mind of
a different person. A person I don't know or understand... with
shards of memories jabbing intermitantly into my consciousness.

Is is a very short read... perhaps owing to the way memories can
be fleeting... perhaps as a precursor to an awakening.

Its interesting to wonder, isn't it... whether our humble
author has penned a fictious memoir as stated... or could it be
a cloak of one telling their own story in the third person.
(Although this memoir is told in the 1st person... tricky devil!)

I've read much of Dantelion's non-fiction work with mixed feelings. Some of it is good work some of it not so good. The Mind Programer was a pleasant surprise I quite enjoyed it. Great price as well!

FIVE STARS PLUS. EXCELLENT RESOURCE FOR EVERYONE--regardless of knowledge or skill. Great book! As an engineer with 35 years experience in the computer industry, I have taken countless corporate classes, community college, technical college and University classes to learn new things and keep my skills updated. I learned BASIC and CPM in the late 1970's so things have come a long long ways. In all these classes I have had expensive text books, expensive class notes (from bookstores), or stacks of copied and recopied notes, tables and articles. I have yet to find any of them enjoyable to read, or even easy to read. I have yet to find any of them complete, error free or able to stand alone as a resource to help you do what you are trying to do. Look at any computer programmers bookshelf, you will see hundreds of books, many of them on the same subjects because none are thorough enough and you have to buy dozens of them. This book is very impressive. Its covers the most important topics and explains everything succinctly. I expected to see the typical charts and diagrams, for example, i expected for HTML to see the color codes and various other reference, and its there, but so much more. The author has taken each of the various components of each topic and listed them by subject and alphabetically sorted, and explained what and how they are used. This is true for all of the subjects--from HTML, to WordPRess, JAVA, --all of it. Its all excellent. Its easy to read, its well written, and I am impressed. I could use this as a text in the classes I have taught and not only do well as an instructor, but the students would and could use this book throughout their careers, or at least through their education if they do not pursue a computer career. Its title, "18 books in 1" is clever because it really is 18 books. I wont list the contents, that would be repetitive, but its got all of the most popular and current reference you would need to build websites, or to manage websites, (ie system administrator/webmaster etc). This is not an easy task and I am in awe of the author for having the wherewithal to not only do it, but to be able to put it all together and do so in a way that makes it usable for everyone from those with little or no experience, to students, to professionals--who would use it as reference material. I liked that it was not a rehash of the same old same old that you read in all of the current books, nor was it just printouts from various websites. There is some very useful and interesting information too, like the % of servers running (list of server software), or % of websites built from (website building applications) and so on. I don't know where he found it, but its interesting to see. Without a doubt I give it 5 stars. LOTS of information but in many cases, more like a reference, and probably not good for newbies; can't download example files

Wow. I'm a software developer and I can certainly tell you that there is A LOT of information in this book. It is "super-concise", and probably too concise for a lot of people. I would NOT recommend this book for a beginner or newbie. Intermediate and advanced web developers would likely find it useful. A beginner may find it useful as a reference to use in addition to a "standard" learning book that is not so concise, that takes things more slowly, and that includes more explanation.

In many places (perhaps in more places than not), it gave me the impression of a reference guide instead of teaching book. Keep that in mind. Also, some of the topics went over my head. I guess no one can be an expert in all web technologies anymore, or at least very few people. While I could spend a lot of time "mastering" each chapter, I thought it would be better to set some of the topics aside and come back to them when I have an actual need. You'll probably feel the same way and have chapters that are much more useful to you than others, but the nice thing is that the less-useful chapters might to quite useful to you later, so you'll want to keep this book on-hand.

While there are a lot of examples, you will probably need to "play" with some of them to fully understand them... that means typing them up if you get the paperback version because as far as I know, you can't download the example files. This is quite unfortunate. If you get the Kindle version then you may be able to copy and paste them and not have to type them.

Oh, I also ran into multiple typos and some errors but nothing serious enough to significantly detract from all the information.

So while this book has a lot of information (and I mean A LOT!), because of the above issues I mentioned I'm rating it 4 stars instead of 5.

A Revised Look at Modern China

This book, now in its second edition, has been quite successful and has in one sense managed to fill a perceived need among literate westerners, particulaarly Americans, to know something about modern Chinese history.
However, few people appreciate what a ground-breaking book this was, at least in its first edition. That it was a popular history of China ("popular" in the sense that it was not primarily designed to be a college text) was not unique; reasonably well-researched surveys of Chinese history have been around since the nineteenth century. But for those of us who sat through an undergraduate course on Chinese history prior to 1980, Spence's approach was refreshingly un-Eurocentered.
Once upon a time, Chinese history was presented in two neat halves: the first half was "traditional" China from prehistoric times to the Opium Wars (1840's). The second half was everything else going forward. The overall impression was that everything changed when the white man appeared - which is, of course, a misperception, to put it mildly. Spence conceives of "modern" Chinese history as beginning with the Ming Dynasty, and treated the Western intervention as just one theme among many.
Thus, Spence was able to present a new view of China to a new generation, and it was a viewpoint that explains a great deal more than previous ones did. That he does it in such a compelling way, opening new vistas up to us in the process, is what makes this a great book. A great deal of thought and sensitivity has gone into this work, and it deserves to be appreciated for that.

An excellent history for the novice

I enjoyed this book for several reasons. The writing is excellent. It does not read like dry history. The author starts with the fall of the Ming dynasty. This is an excellent choice. By starting here, the reader better understands why China views the west it does. This places current events more in historical perspective. I also liked the author making value judgments about various historical figures and events. I am sure these value judgments will provoke controversy by the academic community. Spence does a good job of showing that the Communist revolution was more than a cult of Mao. Others were involved and Mao had his limits of power. This book is an excellent choice for someone who knows little about Chinese history but wants a quick survey of recent history.
As for weaknesses, I thought the coverage of the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution was weak. The horror of these two events is discussed too dispassionately. If readers have no previous knowledge of these two events, it is hard from this text to understand the nature of the true tragedy.
As a disclaimer, I am not a scholar of Chinese history. I had only read a few books and have had no academic courses in Chinese history

The best one volume history of modern China

I have read Jonathan Spence's history course on modern China is one of the most popular courses at Yale University. "The Search for Modern China" is a great introduction to modern Chinese history. Spence's prose is very readable and the book is obviously exceedingly well researched.

Unlike the tendency of most Americans to falsely claim the United States and the West in general are at the center of the historical unverse, this book presents modern Chinese history primarily in a Chinese context. I especially enjoyed the chapters about the fall of the Ming dynasty and the Kangxi emperor, who was probably the wisest and most capable of the Qing emperors.

Americans and other people should be better able to understand after reading Jonathan Spence's book, the resentment many Chinese still have about recent, as well as current Western interference and continued popular hostility toward Japan. For nearly a century, as Spence ably writes, China endured a system of western imposed unequal treaties, a semi-colonial western and Japanese presence in many large Chinese cities and Japanese invasion. The western intrusion in China had the inadvertent consequences of weakening the Qing dynasty. The Japanese invasion prevented Jiang Jieshi or Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalist armies from completely defeating Mao's Communist forces. Had there been no Japanese invasion of China, it is likely the communists would have never prevailed over the Nationalists. The century of western and Japanese imperialism in China helps explain why many Chinese still harbor strong suspicions and resentment about recent and current United States policies toward China.

While the book is fairly long, I think Spence could improve his book even more if he made it longer, with more extensive coverage of Chinese history since 1960. My only specific criticism of this book is that Spence should have more thoroughly covered the immense human disaster of the so-called Great Leap Forward, where 20 to 30 million human beings, primarily peasants died of starvation because of the extremely misguided economic policies of Mao.

Also, the Cultural Revolution was far more terrible than portrayed in this book. I highly recommend Jung Chang's "Wild Swans" for an excellent first hand description of the cruelty common by Red Guards during the Cultural Revolution.

In general though, Jonathan Spence's book is an excellent introduction to modern Chinese history and can be reread for further understanding.

Excellent overview on the historical importance of coal

For those interested in world history, this book fills in many blanks. It is a pleasurable read, full of innumerable factoids and insights about how coal has affected human history. It also adds information about the transition from England to the U.S., one that involves coal, wood and the increasing thrust for power. I've read other books on coal. I don't think that there is a better one than this one.

Things really start with the Chinese, but that is disclosed in a later chapter of the book. For the most part, the book focuses on Britain, then the United States. It tells us that the Romans did a bit of burning coal in Britain, but after they left, centuries of the Dark Ages recorded no further progress. But when England awakes by the 1500s, and begins to burn through most of its wood, and as it adds more and more people, it becomes the first western nation to mine and burn coal in large quantities. This, of course, eventually leads to "a coal-fired industrial revolution."

Interestingly, most of the coal land in England early on was owned by the Catholic Church. But as most coal on the surface was gathered, and getting to the stuff deeper in the ground required a more extensive operation, The Church was not really up to the task. When Henry VIII decided to become the head of the Church of England, that really freed things up. The richest coal lands in the country now became property of the crown. English merchants and industrialists took over from there.

By 1700, the city of Newcastle, in northeastern England, had been producing coal for more than a century. Expanding mines would produce more coal than ever, as rural immigrants came to the area for work. The book paints a horrible picture of the life of the coal miners, who worked in cramped, dark, cold and wet, underground conditions. Tunnels collapsed, explosions occurred, water rushed into the mines, poisonous gas would kill. But the Newcastle coal mines were thought to be inexhaustible, and, per the book, "by 1700, Britain was mining five times more coal than the rest of the world, combined." The demand for it was becoming insatiable.

As the mine shafts and tunnels went deeper underground, water entered and needed to be extracted. This was a tedious task, first done by manpower, then by horsepower. But what got things turned around was the invention of the steam engine.

By the 1760s, steam engines, fueled by coal, itself, were doing the work of fifty horses, each, pumping water out of coal mines all over England and Scotland. Then, James Watt came along to improve the fuel efficiency of the pumps and their horsepower. His engines were suitable, as well, for factories. Between 1780 and 1830, people would move in droves to the cities to join the industrial workforce. Britain was producing 80% of the world's coal, and the epicenter of its output was to become Manchester, with its production of cotton cloth and other finished goods.
Coal was the base of things. It supplied all the fuel for the factories. It was used in the homes for heat, and it was used for cooking, as well. Manchester had factories with more than a thousand workers, each, and the steam engine encouraged increasingly larger economies of scale. Additionally, heated or baked coal was the source of gas lighting, with the gas being piped to the factories to supply bright lighting. The shifts in the mines were twelve hours. There was no place for public parks or recreation areas in Newcastle or Manchester. The air of the cities was thick with smoke. The average life expectancy was only seventeen years.

Coal also fueled the steam engines on the ships that moved coal from its source to the factories. Canals were built, then, eventually, came the railroads. It was all about the movement of coal to the factories. The city of London developed into the hub of Britain's industrial output.
With the population of London going from about 200,000 in 1600 to one million in 1800, it had become the largest city in the world by 1750. It became ten times larger than Manchester. By 1860, it would house three million. But like Manchester, the air of London was foul, with smoke and dust everywhere.

Then came the opportunities of a new land. Masses of British workers saw their escape from the crowded slums of Manchester and London via a voyage across the Atlantic to a land of fresh air and free land. In fact, when arriving in American, the colonists found an endless supply of lumber. This would serve as an early export product on the immigrant ships returning to England, where wood continued to be in short supply. The colonists had no need to search for coal, but, in time, the new nation would realize that below its land was the largest concentrations of coal in the world.

Just as coal fueled the British industrial revolution, so it would in America. The state of Pennsylvania was full of the stuff, as were the Appalachians to the south. The city of Philadelphia would become the nation's largest and richest city. And, just as had been the case in England, the supply of wood would be tested and reduced. With the price of wood rising, Americans turned more and more to coal as a source for power and heat. Canals were built, and the railroads, which first burned wood, made their transition to coal. Huge factories developed, and the population began to shift from small towns to urban centers. Again, the pattern was similar to that of England.

American's second industrial revolution was built on coal. By the late 1890s, America led the world in coal production. (Recently, China has gained this honor.) Britain and Germany fell behind. Few could imagine that progress in the world was not dependent on coal.
The book covers the developments of coal in the world wars, and it tells us of the beginnings of the use of petroleum products. It covers the problems caused by sulfur dioxide and the industry's efforts to reject regulations. But it reminds us that, even today, coal is responsible for the production of half of our nation's electricity. And it tells us of the shift in the major source of America's coal from West Virginia to Wyoming.

There is a chapter on the history of coal in China. Then, the book ends with a summary/review chapter, named, "A Burning Legacy." Again, it tells us that coal took Britain from a rural nation to a world-class commercial power. It made London the largest city in the world. The steam engine and the railway expanded things, as coal provided cheap iron and steel for all kinds of things that advanced the western world.

"Coal, A Human History." I recommend it.

Take your lumps!

As with most of my reviews I get about a third or halfway through a book and declare it one the best books I could imagine reading; 'Coal: A Human History' is no exception. Just the sheer background of info starting with its formation, discovery and industrialization make it a book not to be put down or taken lightly. The ancillary history lessons one gets from reading 'one subject' books like these are just priceless, in my opinion. The Industrial Revolutions of both England and the U.S. dependencies on coal are explored here in pretty good detail to my liking. At these affordable prices you should pick up a copy of 'Coal' to see for yourself. Barbara Freese has done a very good thing here.

Excellent research, reasoning - not flashy, very solid

There is much less advocacy here than in (the terrible) Coal River or (the good) Moving Mountains, but just as much information, both scientific and historical, primarily the latter. Freese is a former assistant attorney general of Minnesota who reasons rather than assails. She reasons (correctly, I believe) that we humans use energy from the sun to function. "Life on earth is, in short, a vast and sophisticated system for capturing, converting, storing and moving solar energy." As a nascent civilization developed, humans used solar-source energy stored in recently dead plants and animals to power their lives. Those resources limit the population that the earth can support. For example, a small cabin in a temperate climate (like that of West Virginia) uses about 15 cords of firewood per year, which is the output of just under an acre. (One cord equals 128 cubic feet.) In England, where coal was first mined, the forests were vanishing at an alarming rate. Up to that point, we were "spending the interest," the current solar energy converted.

And then came coal, solar-source energy from long-dead plants which had stored energy collected over millions of years, and which let us begin profligately spending the principal. There was (and is) so much coal that until the mid-20th Century, it was considered functionally infinite. Even the oil industry was made possible with the power of coal. The dependence on coal is alarming - fully half of the electricity that we use comes from coal. The environmental effects have crept up to an alarming point. On an average day in the Eastern United States, you can see fourteen miles, due to tiny sulfate particulates that scatter sunlight. Without human-made air pollution, you could see forty-five-plus miles.

Freese discusses fairly the dispute about mountain top/valley fill mining, that it is "pitting those who want to hang on to dwindling coal jobs against those who hate to see their mountains and valleys forever altered."

Whether you are a conservationist, an industrialist, or both, if you believe in Vince Lombardi's "back to basics" approach, this book has great value.
