One of the three best instructional manuals

I recommend three manuals for the novice calligrapher: Calligraphy and Illumination: A History and Practical Guide by Patricia Lovett, The Calligrapher's Bible by David Harris (see my reviews of both texts) and this text, Learn Calligraphy by Margaret Shepherd, one of the foremost experts on the subject. While there are, of course, other books and certainly a selection of internet videos demonstrating various aspects of the subject, I have yet to discover any others that so thoroughly cover the material in such an organized manner and anticipate many of the stumbling blocks and questions often encountered by the novice. Ms. Shepherd's book starts right at the beginning and details all the does and don't s, obstacles and observations that a novice will chance to encounter from the start and answers the usual questions that every beginner will ask before and after having begun the task of learning the craft. While Ms. Lovett's text delves into greater depth and detail, Learning Calligraphy is the first text that I would recommend before referring to any other since this will definitely get you started and keep you going. I would also recommend her daily blog and website as it is happily filled with an endless assortment of perspectives, insights and recommendations for anyone searching for inspiration along the way. Margaret Shepherds other books are also outstanding but this is the one to get you started before digging into the others.

Not a good book for beginners

This isn't what I was expecting at all. Comes across as an instructional book. Was expecting lesson plans and full alphabets for each font as well as dictation on pen holding. What I got instead as a book on the history of calligraphy. Not a good book for beginners.

Although it doesn't endow artistic talent on those of us with none, this is nonetheless an excellent guide to calligraphy

This turned out to be an exact copy of a book that I had received Christmas along with a set of calligraphy pens, with multiple nibs and a lovely notebook in which to write. I loved the idea and I turned my attention to learning calligraphy. Besides, I had worked at the faculty club and while I was working I was impressed by the signature on meal chits by the famous American Church Historian Martin Marty, which was always written in beautiful calligraphic characters.

The problem, however, is that I'm simply an absolutely awful drawer. I am unable to draw even the simplest representations of reality, and am even worse when trying to do something nonrepresentational. And this lack of artistic skill carries over into calligraphy. I have tried and tried to learn even the most elementary abilities, but I have failed. Even using different kinds of markers and fountain pen nibs I've failed to do.

I attribute the failure to myself and not to this book, so let me recommend this book despite my own personal failure. It you have a history of having any kind of artistic school, no matter how minimal, I recommend this warmly. I loved the information in the book, and the way it started with funamentals and gradually but steadily added to the skills you develop early on. I'm just a ghastly drawer/artist/calligrapher and not even this excellent book could do much to change that.

Racist Literature in Nursing

Don't let the cover fool you, this book is racist! Most African-Americans do not speak Vernacular English, also known as Ebonics. Maybe the few the author has encountered in her life do, but I bet they'd catch all her typos in this literature. Her statement is inaccurate and stereotyped. In case you are confused, there isn't a language line at the hospital for the national language of "African Americans". I couldn't help but notice that her talk on the LGBT community came from a victimized point of view, referring to senior "members" as poor because of job discrimination. But no such mention of that towards the minority "members" who live through discrimination from birth to death, with no choice to accept or deny their "membership" into this group. I also noticed that in educating the reader of typical characteristics of racial groups, there wasn't a section dedicated to the whites that took the land from the American Indians and brought these Ebonic speaking Africans over to the great USA by force and made them slaves. Talk about discrimination! So my multiracial mind has no choice but to think very lowly of this author. I hope she comes to the light and sees the truth behind her own biases. I will be throwing this paper weight in the trash at the end of the semester.

About the Author
Matt has been drawing ever since he could first hold a pencil, and super heroes have always filled up the majority of the pages in his sketchbooks. That lifelong love of comic books spurred him to write the Jack Blank Adventure series, published by Simon & Schuster's Aladdin imprint.

Prior to that, Matt worked at MTV Networks for nearly ten years. During that time, he was involved in everything from booking and producing celebrity interviews, to helping launch mtvU (MTV's 24-hour college network), to managing Spring Break events in Panama City Beach, Cancun, and Acapulco. He also worked on several less exciting projects as well, but never mind that now. Matt's true passion has always lain in his writing and artwork.

Swashbuckling Pirate Adventure for Tweens

SEABORNE: THE LOST PRINCE by Matt Myklusch is the first book in a new adventure series featuring a teen boy pirate.

More of a spy than a pirate, young Dean Seaborne is forced to work for the evil pirate king One-Eyed Jack. As an orphan, Seaborne becomes caught between two worlds as he tries to decide whether to continue his pirating ways or side with a beautiful girl from a mythical island.

The fast-paced, swashbuckling action will appeal to the tween audience. The addition of a sea dragon will expand the audience to include those who enjoy fantasy elements. The bright book cover and exciting first chapter (our hero almost gets eaten by sharks) will be a draw for reluctant readers.

Myklusch knows how to write for the tween crowd. He effectively balances description with dialogue for an engaging story. The vocabulary is rich while still being age-appropriate. The action is non-stop and the characters are also on target for youth readers. This fun adventure at sea is a great starting point for readers who enjoy the imaginative world of pirates.

Exciting

This is a exciting adventure, with pirates, a fabled island where gold grows on trees, trials to prove worthiness of royal, and pirate battle. You don't want to stop reading. You can never guess where the story is going to go next. It is also a clean read.

The characters are a good mix of bad guys you hate, bad guys that you love to root for and some you just love. Dean Seaborne is the main character that the story centers around.

Dean is 13 year old. He tried running away from the Pirate King. He is almost fed to the sharks.
He is given one more chance to find out why Gentleman Jim has been sending less money to him.
Dean gets taken on with Gentleman Jim. He is only their a short time but his ways rub off on Dean.

One-Eyed Jack the Pirate king. He is feared by plenty. The pirates pay him a tithe. He does not care who he hurts or kills.

Gentleman Jim Harper captain of the Reckless. He only robs those who can afford it. His crew are all children. He does not harm anyone if he can help it. They scare them. Most of his crew are loyal.

Ronan is first mate on the Reckless. He is smart, big and does not give up.

The setting for this book is the Caribbean and Bermuda Triangle.

The adventure draws you in from the first chapter. The story is fast paced. It is creative. I liked the sea monsters or at least one of them.

Dean's life is at risk for most of the book. Some of his enemies are known others you are not sure of till they are revealed.

The target audience is 8 to 12 years old. I think a lot more will like it. I loved it and I am a lot older. My 23 year old daughter loved it too. I think fans of Ranger Apprentice, Percy Jackson, Brotherband, and Harry Potter will like it too.

Shiver Me Timbers! This Is Brilliant!

Shiver me timbers! I really liked this book a lot! No, actually, my two sons and I loved Dean Seaborne, the Lost Prince! This swashbuckling first book in the Seaborne series by Matt Myklusch had us gripped from page one. Yep, right from the start, the excitement and thrill had begun. And it didn’t end until on the last page.

Imagine 13-year old Dean Seaborne, a pirate, er, a spy working for Pirate King One-Eyed Jack. He was taken by the Black Fleet, branded by Scurvy Gill and had worked with the rest of the crew. He longed to have his freedom, he attempted to run for it, but One-Eyed Jack caught him. Soon, he found himself inside a cage, being lowered to the vast ocean, about to be fed to the sharks. Oh dear, there was even the Great White shark with its snappy sharp teeth.

One-Eyed Jack spared his life eventually, (thank goodness!) and Dean was tasked to spy on Gentleman Jim Harper of the Reckless fleet., to know why his monthly share was diminishing. After a quite impressive and dramatic act, (stealing a bag of coins right under the Gentleman’s nose), Dean earned the respect of the Captain and soon became part of the Pirate Youth. He learned Jim’s good-natured ways, his compassion to the needy and strict implementation of the Pirate rules, thanks to Ronan, Jim’s first mate and trusted right hand.

We were just sad when tragedy befell the Reckless. But when a new stranger arrived and told Dean that he may be the one that Zenhala was waiting for, the tides have turned and more daunting adventures followed Seaborne and the rest of his crew.

Waverly was an interesting love interest too, but my kids weren’t much impressed with her. I liked, however, that she was free-spirited, courageous and unpredictable. She’s a good match for Dean, in my opinion. (Although my kids kept telling me she’d just be on Dean’s way.. I tried to keep an open mind, after all, my sons aren’t really into girls lately. They insist they’re still too young to fall in love. Ha ha ha)

Overall, we all agreed that this story was brilliant! Blimey! The book was very hard to put down once we got started. We know there’s still a lot in store for Dean and we can’t wait to read about it!

About the Author
Matthias Dehmer studied mathematics at the University of Siegen (Germany) and received his Ph.D. in computer science from the Technical University of Darmstadt (Germany). Afterwards, he was a research fellow at Vienna Bio Center (Austria) and at Vienna University of Technology. Currently, he is an Associate Professor at UMIT - The Health and Life Sciences University (Austria). His research interests are in bioinformatics, chemical graph theory, systems biology, complex networks, statistics and information theory. In particular, he is also working on machine learning-based methods to design new data analysis methods for solving problems in computational biology and medicinal chemistry.

Kurt Varmuza studied chemistry at the Vienna University of Technology (Austria). His research activities were first mass spectrometry and then moved to chemometrics - mainly the application of multivariate statistical analysis for chemistry related problems, such as spectra-structure relationships and structureproperty relationships. Since 1992, he has been working as a professor at the Vienna University of Technology, currently at the Institute of Chemical Engineering.

Danail Bonchev received his Ph. D. in quantum chemistry in Sofia, Bulgaria and D. Sc. in mathematical chemistry from the Moscow State University in Russia. He worked till 1992 as a professor of physical chemistry in the Assen Zlatarov University in Bourgas, Bulgaria. In 1992 he joined Texas A&M University at Galveston, and since 2003 he is professor at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. His research includes quantum chemistry, molecular topology, QSPR and QSAR and, recently, bioinformatics and computational biology.

An impressively broad study that can help the reader find answers to dilemmas traditionally posed by translation studies such us descriptive vs prescriptive, invisible vs visible translator, etc. It all boils down to the ethos, the politics and the economy behind the act of translation.
