About the Author
Katrin Eismann is an internationally respected teacher and lecturer on photographic imaging, restoration, retouching, and the impact of
emerging technologies on photography and the arts. Katrin received an undergraduate degree in photographic illustration from the Rochester Institute of Technology and her Master of Fine Arts degree in design at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Her other books include Photoshop Masking & Compositing and Real World Digital Photography.
In 2005, she was inducted into the Photoshop Hall of Fame by the National Association of Photoshop Professionals. Wayne Palmer is the principal of Palmer Multimedia Imaging, which offers custom photography, video, and restoration services. Wayne has worked with Adobe Photoshop since version 3; teaches Photoshop and digital photography classes; and is the technical editor of numerous books on digital imaging techniques.

This is a must-have in your Photoshop library

Whether you plan to do any retouching or restoration of photos in Photoshop is immaterial: you still should have this book in your Photoshop library.
Why?
Because Katrin Eismann is not only a true master of Photoshop, but she is that rarity of rarities: a teacher who can teach through the written word - and in this case, a ton of illustrations.
This is truly a Photoshop master's class between covers. It is not for the beginner - Eismann wisely leaves that for others. You should definitely know the basics of Photoshop for cracking this book open.
But once you begin, you are in for a treat: ten chapters that cover everything you need to know about retouching and restoration in detail. Best of all, every technique Eismann teaches in this book will make you a more proficient Photoshop user, no matter what you use the program for.
Unlike other authors, Eismann doesn't simply get you going and then leave you hanging. Her lessons are complete. And Eismann - happily - doesn't try to be a comedian like Scott Kelby, Deke McClelland and Russell Brown. Her writing style is clear, concise and natural and a delight to read.
Buy this and her book on masking and compositing along with Lee Varis's book called "Skin" and Steve Caplain's book on photo montage and you'll have the basis for a truly fine education in the art of Photoshop.

One of the Few Books Covering Restpration

Photograph retouching has long been a process where a picture has been improved to remove the background, clean up a bad light reflection or other faults with the picture. And this book does an excellent job of telling you how to retouch such pictures.
More important, though is the sections in this book on photo restoration. How do you take the old picture of that Civil War ancestor, or that snapshot of Grandmother when she was a young girl and make it look like a portrait that just came out of the camera today.
Although the book is very good on retouching, there simply aren't that many books on restoration. And Ms. Eisman is a master at restoring old images. In this book there are full-color, step-by-step examples of rescuing heirloom originals suffering from mold, cracks, torn edges, scratches. There is even a section on restoring missing parts of an image. Such as using a person's right arm to replace the left that had been torn off.
Besides the coverage of areas not usually seen, this book further has a writing style that clearly and succinctly explains each step in the process. This book is highly recommended.

Worth every dime spent, quite possibly the best retouch book

As I ventured into further and further depths into the wonderfully deep world of Photoshop, there came a need to improve my retouching technique. So I purchased both this book and also Scott Kelbys "Photo Retouching Secrets" at the same time. I gotta say, while I have gotten a few useful and neat tricks out of Kelbys book, I feel that Eismanns book is the far better piece of work for what I was looking for. My view on this comes down to the fact that I prefer to have a book that teaches me some ideas, and makes me think, versus just a book that presents a laundry list of quick tricks and tips. Same thing for the "wow" books.. while they are "fun", they aren't on my required reading list for Photoshop books... they really don't get you involved in problem solving or technical kind of learning experience that I feel is necessary to master this (Photoshop) program. So, you, the reader, have to decide what you are looking for. If you want just a quick and dirty set of tips to retouch photos and you consider yourself a beginner to light intermediate, then Kelbys book might be better. (Kelbys book is far from bad, I'm just stating a strong preference for this one instead)
However, if you seriously want to get inside the head of a great retoucher, and learn more powerful techniques, definitely check out this (Eismanns) book. Another plus to this book is Katrin never tosses you an attitude about her views. She credits other people when she has learned from them. In this regard she is about as far away from someone like the incredibly brilliant but occasionally arrogant Dan Margulis of "Photoshop 6/Classic Guide to Color Correction" fame.
The only weaknesses in the book (and the reason I deduct a star) are a less than stellar coverage of density, contrast and color correction. (however, this topic is covered quite well in the aforementioned Margulis book or the Photoshop Artistry book by Haynes/Crumpler)
This shortcoming, however, is balanced out with incredibly good portrait and glamour retouching sections as well as good discussions on restoration techniques. Seriously recommended.
