Ronald Potter-Efron, MSW, PhD, is director of the anger management clinic at First Things First Counseling in Eau Claire, WI. He is author of many books about anger, including Angry All the Time, Letting Go of Anger, Rage, and The Handbook of Anger Management.

Healing for your Angry Brain, Body and Actions

For most of my life, four things have troubled me beyond measure: sexual relations, anxiety, money and anger. Anger toward others and anger toward me has been most troubling.
Aristotle wrote that "Anybody can become angry - that is easy, but to be angry with the right person and to the right degree and at the right time and for the right purpose, and in the right way - that is not within everybody's power and is not easy."
In his book, "Healing the Angry Brain" Dr. Potter-Efron presents theory and practical advice to handle anger. This book helps "how understanding the way our brain works can help each of us control anger and aggression."
The author claims we can change because our brains have the characteristic science calls "plasticity," which he explains in Chapter 5 called "You can change your brain." Page 89, covers How to change the brain.
Like many non-fiction books, I browse the chapters and often begin with the last chapter. Chapter 8 is the last chapter and called "Developing Empathy." He states that some can use empathy to manipulate and influence others. Some of these types are politicians, salespeople and cult leaders.
The correct way to use empathy is what the author calls "empathetic concern." He also states the truth about forgiveness. If you want to know what you can do to help improve your life by dealing appropriately with anger, read chapter 8 first and then begin from the beginning of the book.
It is worth repeating Aristotle. "Anybody can become angry - that is easy, but to be angry with the right person and to the right degree and at the right time and for the right purpose, and in the right way - that is not within everybody's power and is not easy."

Expert advice in highly-readable form. Deftly combines an introduction to brain science with engaging anecdotes. The author also has an excellent video interview on a website for therapists if you can track it down.

How our emotions work and ways to deal with it.
It is a very well done, readable, instructive and helpful book.
I highly recommend it.
