A book of plans for browsing

As others have noted, this book is actually a reprint of an old collection of plans. The techniques used in construction are very traditional; no plywood, epoxy or synthetic bedding compunds found here. It's not a beginner's book, either, although a careful craftsman could probably build the first one or two boats with a little thought.
But even if you never built any of these boats-- and I suspect most who buy the book fall into this category-- this volume is still a wonderful addition to the bookshelf. I bought my copy before I knew anything about boat construction, and the more I learn, the more I enjoy casually thumbing through it. At the price, it's a bargain; I'd recommend it to anyone with an interest in boat design, or traditional construction, or who just likes looking at boat plans.

A fun, old book, but not a practical how-to guide.

I enjoyed the book and agree with the reviewer who said it is a must for anyone's collections. The book is not, however, what, from the title and the reviews, I believed it would be. This is not a practical guide for novice boat builders.
This how-to guide is an unabridged republication of a book originally published in 1934. Much of the advice is dated. Sixteen horsepower outboards are no longer suitable for racing boats. To build a stream box, it is no longer practical to look for an old "stove boiler" (whatever that is) abandoned on a vacant lot. The author never mentions power tools. And the section on legal requirements for a new boat bears a publisher's footnote indicating that the information has not been updated in 65 years and may no longer be right. The author also assumes that the reader already has extensive knowledge about boats. For example, it seems that almost every board and plank on a boat has a unique name to boat builders, and the author uses those terms throughout the book, but nowhere does he provide a diagram of a boat with all of the various parts labeled.
I enjoyed reading this book the same way that I enjoy reading old newspapers: as a snapshot of the past and as a work that occasionally provides new insights. I imagine that an experienced boat builder could find much in the book that is useful, and at a bargain price. This is not, however, a practical how-to guide, at least not for novices.

No, you won't become an accomplished boat builder simply by picking up this little book, or any other for that matter. Respect this beauty for it's glimpse at tradition provided by an underappreciated master of a dying trade.
This book includes lines and offsets for 16 boats. Good boats. Where can one find plans for a stunning example of a 125 class step hydro, or a well proportioned little full keel sloop for the paltry sum of the cover price of this book? Only getting started? Check out the pram, the punt, or the skiffs.
Monk's designs are relevant even in these days of design software and chopper guns. If you are an aspiring boatbuilder, this book can help you to learn respect for the old timers and their ways. If you're an accomplished boat builder in search of a worthwhile project, this book provides many. All of these designs are adaptable to current methods and materials by the experienced builder.
A wonderful design compilation. Get a different book to learn how to sharpen those shiny new chisels. Enjoy.

In Green Syndicalism, Shantz issues a call to action to the environmental movement and labor activists, particularly rank and file workers, to join forces in a common struggle to protect the environment from capitalism, corporate greed, and the extraction of resources. He argues for a major transformation to address the "jobs versus the environment" rhetoric that divides these two groups along lines of race and class. Combining practical initiatives and theoretical perspectives, Shantz offers an approach that brings together radical ecology and revolutionary unionism in a promising vision of green politics. Green syndicalists work as coalitions to increase community-based economics and productive decision making that encourages the participation of all stakeholders in the process. Drawing, in part, on his own experiences growing up in a working-class family and organizing within radical ecology and labor movements, Shantz charts a path that accesses the commonalities between these groups in an effort to take on the forces that destroy the environment, exploit people, and harm their communities.

Most confusing book...

I thought after reading this book I was rather confused, and then I took the class with the author of this book. I now have an understanding as to why the book is the way it is! The professor is so scatter brained, so unorganized, and such an ineffective teacher, his book matches his teaching method (if you can even call that a method). I think the book is unnecessarily complicated for undergraduate work, and I truly believe if he had not strived to sound so knowledgeable maybe his audience would walk away with a clear understanding of the material, rather than a haze of confusion and frustration! Avoid this book, and avoid this author/professor like a plague! Nice man, poor teaching methods, and incredibly bad writing skills for an educated man.

TERRIBLE!!!!!!!

This is a terrible book, not only is it boring but it's complicating on certain topics that are very important for a psychology student. There are NO review questions at the end of the chapters which is absoultely ridiculous. And worst there is NO glossary at the back of the book for all the terms used in the book. What textbook doesn't have a glossary at the end of it? It was difficult to read and understand the words when I couldn't go to the glossary and get a better definition of the terms. I would no recommend this textbook, even if your professor recommends it for class. I would look at other textbooks, there are plenty of better ones out there that would help you more in class.

Important info, but very technical

This is one of my least favorite textbooks. It has a lot of information to convey, but it does so in a non-interesting way that does not hold the attention of students. I would not recommend for undergrads, and would recommend that a professor use this in conjunction with another more engaging text for a graduate course.

Unique plot twist that re-defines "happily ever after"

K...this one is tricky and will take some time to review...

I've settled on a 3.5...

So, I finished this book almost a month ago, and I have tried to review it twice. I like the story. It is a great story with a lot of potential: a great female protagonist, interesting and deep supporting characters, a well-developed world, and a unique plot twist that re-defines "happily ever after."

I struggled with the editing in this story though - really struggled. It needed some quality time with a red pen and perhaps another revision to iron out some kinks and further develop the relationship between Leila and Nalick during her imprisonment. Also, there are issues with pacing during this time and too much awkwardness in the development of that relationship for me to be comfortable with it. I mean King Nalick is not one to be messed with; he is scary to most who have heard of him. However, Leila doesn't show her intimidation; I love her attitude toward him even in the face of what she has heard of him. On the other hand, the author doesn't see enough of the development of their relationship to really feel invested in it.

Liked...for half at least

Hmm...I liked this story for the most part at the beginning, but the middle and ending honestly got a little boring and even a little unbelievable. I did like the characters, but I would have loved more detail on events that happened (I'm not going to give away spoilers). Leila seemed a little too good to be true, if that makes sense. She always gets out of tough situations, is the best fighter around (even teaching the men how to fight), all at 18? I don't mean any disrespect to the author, and I did want to find out what the secret was, but it seemed like everyone just accepted it a little too easily. I don't know, it just wasn't I couldn't put down. *I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*

Great bittersweet romance!!

I have to say I loved every moment of this book. From page one all the way to the bittersweet and unexpected ending. I love the world of this book Lexia the desert city, Dria the river city, North Country the mountain city, each with their own unique way of life and each equally descriptive and beautiful. I especially love the characterization, each character has a different unique personality with their own individual quirks. I loved that I could relate to each and every one of them. I also like that the true bad guy in this novel is fate, life, and time. Though their were bad people they were not the main culprit. I haven't ever read a book quite like this one. It was unique and original. I loved how it was more about how she lived her life then her saving the world or some cliche thing. It was well developed, well thought out, and well written. The imagery was beautiful. My favorite part of the whole book was the characterization and the lives and choices each character made. It's been a long time since I've read a book like this not since Cleopatra's Daughter by Michelle Moran.

This book is about a woman named Leila who is a courier. Her friend gets caught one day and Leila barters her life for her friends. Nalick the king that caught her makes a deal with her if she stays and marries him he will let her friend go. Nalick is doing this in the beginning because his seer saw that Leila and he were fated to be together. At first I was pissed at Nalick for forcing her into this when she didn't want it but later I found he was a sweet, caring man that just wanted her to stay long enough to get to know him. I love how their relationship grows. Its slow but because it is its realistic, and there is no denying that they love each other. The other nobles of Lexia don't like Leila because she's a commoner and other kings are trying to kidnap her to make her their bride also, so their lives are hardly dull.

Leila is so cool. She can definitely take care of herself. She's strong-willed, head-strong, and stubborn, but she's also trustworthy, caring, and has a huge heart that is loyal and pure. I loved the children Phillip, Tim, and Ruth. They were adorable and just had my heart melting from the first page. Nalick is a strict and scary king, but underneath he's caring, loving, and a little bit of an anxious worrywart. But he's handsome and has a heart of gold. Anatolio well his character was incredibly done. He was Leila's protector, her shadow. He knew everything about her and he truly cared about her. Now I don't want to give the ending away so all I'm going to say is pay attention to his character because he plays a major role in Leila's life later.

So-so start to a potentially good series

Editor Greta Christina says in the Introduction to her Best Erotic Comics 2008 that she used two criteria in her selection process: she wanted comics with "serious literary/artistic merit" and comics that were "hot." Both of these were necessary conditions. A comic that had one but not the other didn't make the cut.

Fair enough. But these criteria for determining what's "erotic" are boggy, even allowing for the fact that "erotic" is notoriously hard (and probably impossible) to define tightly. "Hot," of course, is unabashedly subjective. "Serious literary/artistic merit" is less so, but Christina says nothing to explain what she means by the standard except that it connotes "thoughtful, insightful, engaging, funny, poignant, political, and/or exceptionally well-drawn." Not much help there.

I bring this up because it seems to me that the comics included in this volume--which Christina claims is the first in a series--are seriously mixed in quality. Part of what's going on is undoubtedly a matter of taste: Christina's aesthetic and erotic tastes don't match up perfectly with mine. But part of it is the needless ambiguity of the standards she claims to have used in putting the volume together. Perhaps a more thoughtful discussion of what she means by "erotic" would've helped her be less scatter-gunned in her selections and more consistent in choosing high quality ones.

Ellen Forney's cover as well as her "Handy Map to Erogenous Zones" and "After House"; Colleen Coover's playful "A Bondage Tale"; Vince Coleman's "Flying to New Heights"; and Dori Seda's "F--- Story" are perfect examples of what this book could've contained: teasingly sexy, funny, playful, unconventional, tender, well-executed. Equally good but more serious selections include Quinn's "The Eternal Idol"; John Cuneo's "The Best Field Trip Ever"; and Daphne Gottlieb and Diane DiMassa's "Jokes and the Unconscious."

But why Trina Robbins' "Pets," which depicts sex and nudity but clearly isn't intended to be erotic in any sense of the word? Why "Talk Show Queers," which is too long and succeeds in making what should've been hot sex yawningly tedious? Why the sadistic selections from Toshio Saeki--beautifully drawn, granted, but erotic only to folks who get off on torture and mutilation? And what "serious literary/artistic merit" could one possibly claim for Phoebe Gloeckner's "An Evening in Prague," Gilbert Hernandez's "You're an Artist," Susannah Breslin's "My, My American Bukkake," or Ralf Konig's "Sniffing Around" (which at least has the merit of being funny)? For that matter, how are any of these selections "hot" in any reasonable sense of the word?

Why no Alison Bechdel? No trans-comics? And why the inclusion of pre-2008 erotic comics in a volume that announces itself as collecting the best of 2008? (Christina provides an unconvincing rationale in the Introduction.)

Here's a free piece of advice for Last Gasp Publishers. Don't rely on a single editor to put together future volumes in this series. Doing so almost inevitably means publishing volumes that really wind up being "Best Erotic Comics according to the Editor." Invite the leading erotic comic artists to jointly edit future volumes. It can only be an improvement.

A Sensual Trip Into the Wide World of Sex Comics

This first in the annual series shows comics that aren't just designed to turn you on (though some of them surely will), but also tell humorous, honest stories about a range of sexualities, using various artistic styles that show readers just how many ways one can interpret sex. The sex here isn't sanitized or trying to necessarily show any typical idea of "hot sex." In other words, while it's sexy, it's not necessarily something you're going to open and immediately start jerking off to (though you very well might as you go through the book).

There's kinky sex, lesbian sex, dogs talking about their owners (or rather, "the man with the can opener") having sex. Erika Moen's tribute to her silver bullet vibrator, and its ability to give her her first orgasm, when she feared she was lagging behind her peers, is one that many women will be able to relate to. There's everything from cock and ball torture to a man going down on himself to Susannah Breslin's journalistic take on bukkake, where she interviews and examines the motives of the participants, male and female, with an open-minded, curious tone. Some, like "Talk Show Queers," don't need dialogue to get their point across, while others rely more heavily on textual storytelling in addition to the visuals.

Ellen Forney's artwork is a favorite of mine as well, from her eye-catching cover art to her diagram of the human body's erogenous zones to "After Hours." Seasoned sex writer Greta Christina is out to provoke discussion, identification, lust, and much more with this collection. Thankfully, it's so much more than just naked bodies, but gets at the ways we think, talk, and feel about sex. She's included some classics as well as newer work. I appreciated the variety of styles included here, and as a relative newcomer to the world of comics, plan to check out work by some of the artists that are new to me. And, perhaps best of all, is that the series is taking submissions for the 2009 edition, if this one inspires you to submit something of your own (or something you've seen that's particularly hot).

I could draw better then this?

I could draw better then this? Now granted I am in art school and I do draw comics in my spare time but holy cow some of the drawings in here were just awful?
I understand that its erotica, that the point of these stories is to get to the erotic part, plot and dialog be damned. But some of the stories are lacking in the most simple of literary basics.
Some are difficult to understand whats going on, the expressions are off or understated, the details (where you really want details) are skipped or butchered.
There are a couple of good comics in here to pull this collection back from a 0 star rating, but over I was disappointed when I bought it.
I can't believe my first review of a book is on erotica.

A fresh perspective on software quality.

All software projects have one thing in common, regardless of programming language, development methodology or domain: they are all written by people, with quirks of their own. These people are usually organized in teams, adding social interaction dynamics to the mix. But since most of the research available on code quality has been done by programmers, these human factors have rarely been considered - until now.

Adam Tornhill draws from his dual background in psychology and software development to propose innovative techniques that consider how human and social aspects affect code quality and can be monitored with new metrics. The results are both intuitive and surprising - and extremely valuable in understanding the overall quality of a software system.

Adam's ideas are demonstrated by a software versioned control system logs analysis tool - Code Maat - that he graciously made available as open source. Using Code Maat we were able to quickly identify hotspots in our code that demanded close inspection. We found issues that traditional code metrics alone like complexity and code coverage would not have been able to identify, like which modules have been modified by far too many developers, and which ones were decoupled in the design but actually coupled when it came to code changes.

A psychological twist on your codebase!

Adam presents a very different way of looking at your source control. Instead of it merely being the place where you happen to keep your source code, he teaches you how to transform it into a wealth of information about your codebase.
From the simple things like getting a view of the hotspots in your codebase, to more advanced technique that can show you the knowledge distribution between your team, you will learn a ton of useful tips in this book.

While Adam does supply some tools to use along with the techniques in the book, the emphasis has been put on giving you the ability to make use of the information on your own and not enforcing a reliability on any particular 3rd party tool.

I highly recommend this book to any developer who wants to learn more about their codebase. Personally I've used the techniques to both help me get a quick introduction to new codebases, and also to help highlight information that is useful not only to myself, but also to the rest of the development team and management.

Very handy techniques for analyzing code stored in version control systems.

Adam presents a whole new perspective on analysing existing code using the information stored in the version control system. With these techniques, you will be much better equipped to asses where to put your effort next time you get your hands dirty in legacy code. The techniques may be applied to newly developed code as well, to make sure it doesn't evolve into a maintenance nightmare.

Hands on examples makes it easy to follow the techniques presented and use it on your own code projects right away.
