Hall, the hero of Game Wars, is the Dirty Harry of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service whose goal in life is to stop poachers dead in their tracks and who doesn't mind blowing away a few bad guys to do it. (Mind you, we're not talking about the backwoods denizen who bags a deer off-season now and again, but an organized underground economy that may soon drive the alligator extinct for its skin, the walrus extinct for its ivory.) Marc Reisner's account of Hall's dangerous exploits is as thrilling, and infinitely more satisfying on those rare occasions when the hero wins, than any movie chase scene.

Reisner ( Cadillac Desert ) here gives a colorful, action-packed account of three elaborate U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service undercover operations that halted illegal trade in alligator hides, walrus ivory and sacalait (crappie, a fish much favored by southerners). His chief character is agent Dave Hall of the New Orleans office, who masterminds covert operations from Louisiana swamplands to New York City warehouses, from Alaska to Hawaii. Reisner accompanied Hall and David Tullos of the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries on the sacalait case; he met one of Hall's reformed outlaws, A. J. Caro, who infiltrated poaching gangs. There are stories of undercover stings, massive corruption and wild drives across the country. In the final section, Reisner converses with Hall on environmental subjects--the loss of habitat, poaching and pollution. This is a great good guys-bad guys adventure.

Poaching is a term usually associated with illicit hunting and trade of wild animals in Third World countries. In this page-turner of a book, Reisner, author of Cadillac Desert ( LJ 8/86), introduces readers to the lucrative American black market in wildlife contraband and to the undercover Fish and Wildlife Service agents who are battling poachers. He dogs the heels of special agent Dave Hall into the Louisiana swamps where Hall infiltrates an alligator smuggling ring. He also describes Hall's attempt to bring down the Alaskan ivory trade and reveals the magnitude of fish poaching in the South. Reisner concludes with a history of the abuse of American wildlife resources that makes one wonder how it could have been allowed to happen. This lively, fast-paced tale of corruption, greed, and poaching at home is highly recommended for public library collections.

A wake-up call for all who appreciate American wildlife.

Reisner is an exhaustive researcher, who then parlays massive factual data into readable, entertaining (sometimes disturbing) prose. I found Game Wars to be more reader-friendly than Cadillac Desert in that the book moved faster and showed me a very human side of wildlife law enforcement. Through Reisner, I was taken along on numerous exciting U.S. Fish & Wildlife missions, including several life-and-death encounters between federal agents and big-time commercial poachers. As usual, Reisner imparts a sense of what the law is, how it works, and where it needs shoring-up. I would recommend the book to anyone interested in animals, law enforcement, or conservation.

I can't believe it's out of print!

Simply the best wildlife conservation book around. Follow game warden Dave Hall as he works undercover among good ol' boys in Lousiana, Hell's Angels in Alaska and the mafia in New York City in an amazing, accessible (if you can find it) true story that'll be bound to raise your blood pressure over what poaching has done to our wildlife.

Superbly written with eloquence and humour in a style that is accessible to all readers. Presents the concept of wildlife conservation as fundamentally logical and intelligent, without the preachy jargons. Gripping and exhilarating.

The audience cannot help but root for the wildlife conservationists, or risks identifying with corrupt, incestuous, drugged-up, violent imbeciles who choose to disregard conservation to wallow in greed and callous destruction just to satisfy their uncontrollable basal excesses. Thoroughly enjoyed his unrestrained, non-PC disgust with humanity!

Sadly, with a little thought, the audience must realize that it has much more in common with more depraved examples of humanity than with those too rare and few individuals who dedicate their lives to wildlife conservation.

This is an horrendous story leaving many questions about family ...

This is an horrendous story leaving many questions about family services, the role of mandatory reporting and government departments. Katherine X and others in a similar situation need our support, not condemnation. However, I did find the book to be somewhat repetitive and drawn out.

It is very reader friendly book on a difficult subject

This is a very fine book on the subject written for people interested in science. No hard core technical or mathematical knowledge is necessary to read this book except common understanding of modern physics. Author takes you through the beginning of concept of Atom and introduces you Quantum Mechanical concepts as solutions to the problems of Classical Physics in explaining the nature of the things. Every aspect of the Quantum Physics is covered including Elementary Particles and Feynman Diagrams, Group Theory. The book is finished with a nice chapter on the Philosphical implications of the Quantum Theory, very nice. It is not up to date but for a beginner it is very much readable book, I hope you can find a copy of it. I may prefer Reznicks book but this book for someone who hates formulas and is interested in concepts.

Excellent non-technical overview of QM.

This is one of the best "intro" books for those of us whose math skills are limited. Dr. Guillemin takes us from the genesis of QM all the way to it's philosophical implications. There are quite a few diagrams to explain things along the way.

The material covered is wide in scope and thus gives one a great overview of Quantum Mechanics. The math involved is quite easy to follow. However, do not think this is a quick easy read. To really appreciate the text one's full attention is required.

I wanted to read this book for many years and finally got around to it. Excellent introduction albeit a little dated.

An essential part of a professional facilitator's library

Back in it's 1st or 2nd printing, this was probably the only book of its kind. I completely wore it out from constant use. It is an outstanding companion to any training I received from ICA in how to use the group facilitation methods that Spencer describes. She uses case study examples, summaries of numerous group facilitation methods, and practical plans for events like participatory strategic planning retreats.
Recently I went back to it and discovered a whole new appreciation for her wisdom. For example, I was a bit frustrated with the kinda' "mom and apple pie" quality of a group's brainstorm of their values. Spencer provided the insight I needed to set a more challenging context so groups could establish guiding principles for themselves... with teeth! Buy this book and read it. Then read it again after a few years of practice using participatory methods.

Here is the starting point for facilitators

Winning Through Participation is a great foundational resource for facilitation, both for the movement and for facilitators. It is particularly useful for its presentation of basic methods of facilitation, clear forms, and explanatory material. It is a great beginning toolkit for organizing and promoting facilitation.
This book appears to be the first one that sets forth the methods of the Technology of Participation, ToP, so widely used and known facilitation circles. The Institute of Cultural Affairs, ICA, an international non-profit concerned with the human factor in development, through its experience in offering consultancy and leadership in organizational development, was the fertile ground for this method spring forth and grow.

One of the most important books on facilitation available.

Laura Spencer's book Winning Through Participation is one of the earliest and finest introductions to the facilitation process available. Technologies of Participation (ToP) are practical methodologies for the experienced and new facilitator. She introduces the Focused Conversation Method, the ToP Workshop Method, ToP Event Planning and Orchestration Techniques, ToP Strategic Planning Process and many other practical applications of ToP methods. ToP methods were developed by the Institute of Cultural Affairs in the 1950's, 60's and 70's as practical ways of enabling groups to develop their own thinking and solutions to problems. They are still used in 100's of places across the world.
