About the Author
Shoma started reading Mills and Boon romances at the age of eleven, borrowing them from neighbours so that her parents didn’t find out. At that time the thought of writing one herself never entered her head. But a couple of years ago Shoma took up writing and was amazed at how much she enjoyed it. Now she works at her banking job through the week, and tries to balance writing with household chores during weekends. Her family has been unfailingly supportive of her latest hobby.

'In the event of a water evacuation…'

The stewardess's voice droned on and Shefali leaned back in her seat and shut her eyes. Water evacuation, indeed! Unless they crash-landed in a river it was very unlikely they would need life jackets during this flight between one completely land-locked city and another. She winced. If there was only some way to block out all sound. Her head was pounding like crazy, and she had to stop herself from opening her bag and digging out yet another painkiller.

'Cabin crew to stations for take-off,' the Captain's voice said over the plane's PA system, and Shefali's eyes flew open.

She looked out of the window involuntarily. It wasn't the first time she'd seen Delhi from a plane window—there had been trips to Mumbai, to Thailand, even to Paris—but this time she was leaving for good, and she couldn't help but feel a lump in her throat.

The comfortable-looking matronly woman in the seat next to Shefali gave her a reassuring smile. 'Flying for the first time?' she asked.

Shefali shook her head. She didn't want to spend the two-hour flight making polite conversation, and this lady looked the chatty kind. Before Shefali could shut her eyes again, she had started.

'Are you from Delhi or Jabalpur?'

'Neither,' Shefali replied.

But the lady wasn't about to give up. 'Going for a wedding?' she asked, pointing at the henna tattoos that covered Shefali's hands.

Shefali pulled the long sleeves of her shirt down a little further to hide the elaborate designs that extended all the way up her forearms. The traditional mehandi ceremony had been held three days before her wedding-that-never-happened, and she'd had to wait for hours afterwards for the henna paste to dry. The rich black had now faded to orange, but to Shefali's paranoid eyes her hands and arms still screamed out jilted bride.

'Excuse me a second,' she muttered, and pressed the button to call the flight attendant. 'Can I shift to a seat in the emergency exit row?' she asked when the attendant came up to her. 'I have a…a knee problem. I need more leg-room.'

She picked up her handbag and moved gratefully to the seat pointed out to her. It was an aisle seat two rows ahead, and the window seat next to it was occupied by a man around her age who was peering intently into his laptop screen.

Shefali was fastening her seatbelt when the man spoke without looking up from the screen.

'So where are you from, then? If you're not from Delhi or from Jabalpur.'

She gave him a startled look. 'I'm sorry?'

The man turned, and Shefali saw his face for the first time. He was quite strikingly good-looking, with blue-grey eyes and perfectly chiselled features. For a few moments Shefali found herself staring stupidly without a word to say. Fortunately he gave her a quick smile and turned back to his computer.

'I couldn't help overhearing,' he said, and lowering his voice. 'Good thinking with the knee problem.'

'Thanks,' Shefali said. 'I think.'

The man nodded and started typing something into the computer. He didn't seem disposed to talk any more, and Shefali felt a pang of something approaching disappointment. A random conversation with an attractive stranger might have helped take her mind off things. But who was she kidding? Nothing could take her mind off the single, mind-numbingly humiliating fact that her fiance hadn't bothered to turn up for their wedding. The wedding that she had spent the last year planning and preparing for.

Sometimes it felt as if her whole life had been geared towards that one day when she'd marry the perfect man and settle down into happy domesticity. And Pranav had seemed perfect when her parents had introduced him to her. He was rich, successful, and very attractive—and though it was to have been an arranged marriage she'd very quickly started weaving him into her daydreams. Finding out on their wedding day that he'd decided to go back to his ex-girlfriend had been the biggest shock she'd ever had in her sheltered and slightly pampered life.

The attendant brought across their preordered lunch trays. Her neighbour closed his laptop and took his. Shefali shook her head abruptly.

'No, thanks,' she said. Her head was still aching, and even the sight of food was off-putting.

'Can I have it?' the man next to her asked. He gave her a quick grin. 'I missed breakfast—and, well…' He gestured towards his tray. 'This doesn't look like enough to keep a mouse alive.'

'OK,' Shefali said, taking her tray from the attendant and passing it on. His hands were good, she noticed. Strong, with square-tipped fingers, sinewy wrists and no rings. She'd never liked Pranav's hands—thin and hairy: an awful combination. Pity they hadn't been grounds enough for her to decide against marrying him.

'You're sure you don't want any of this?' the man was asking, gesturing towards the two trays.

Shefali barely repressed a shudder. 'I'm sure, thanks. Just the bottle of water, please.'

He handed it to her, and she took it, carefully avoiding touching his hand. His proximity was affecting her weirdly, and she didn't want him to notice. Her head still ached, and she picked up her bag, rummaging around in it for the package of painkillers. They seemed to have vanished, so she pulled out her table and starting putting the contents of her designer bag on it one by one. The painkillers finally turned up, wedged between the pages of the novel she'd been too stressed to take out and read. Heaving a sigh of relief, she popped open the blister pack and put one into her mouth.

She hadn't opened the bottle of water yet. She tried to twist it open, but the seal stubbornly refused to break. And the pill she'd put in the centre of her tongue—because, according to her primary school science teacher, there were no tastebuds there—was slowly dissolving in her saliva and spreading to parts of her mouth where there were tastebuds. It tasted vile.

'Ugh,' she said, as politely as she could to the man next to her.

He had stopped eating and was staring with horrified fascination at the heap of things that had emerged from her bag.

'Ugh,' she said again, and finally nudged him with her elbow and pointed at the bottle.

'Oh—sorry,' he said, taking the bottle from her and opening it with an effortless twist of his wrist. 'Here you go.'

She grabbed it from him with more haste than grace and took a few rapid gulps. The pill finally went down, though it cleaved lovingly to the roof her mouth for as long as it could. She made a face—the bitter taste in her mouth was refusing to go away.

'Have some sugar,' the man suggested, giving her a little sachet from one of his two lunch trays.

His voice was perfectly grave, but he was laughing, his eyes crinkling up at the corners in the most attractive way possible. His teeth were perfect, Shefali noticed. Having gone through years of painful and extremely expensive orthodontic treatment to achieve her own current flawless smile, she resented people who'd been born to have perfectly aligned teeth. He looked as if he'd never had to go to a dentist in his life.

Her neighbour polished off his second dessert and handed the empty trays to one of the stewards. 'We've almost arrived,' he remarked, looking at his watch, and the seatbelt sign came on as if on cue.

Shefali didn't answer, but clenched her hands unconsciously. This was it, then. The start of her brand-new life. In a few minutes they'd be landing in a city where no one knew about her engagement and the disastrous end to it, and she could make a completely new start. She'd never taken her job very seriously—teaching at a playschool had been just something she did to fill the time between graduation and marriage—but when she'd wanted to get out of Delhi it had been her boss who'd come to her rescue, offering her the job of centre manager at their Jabalpur branch, and she was determined not to let him down.

Neil Mitra was looking at his neighbour curiously. There was something odd about her—some kind of pent-up anxiety that came through in her strained expression and rather jerky movements. Also, from what he'd been able to see of the packaging, the pills she'd been popping were either anti-depressants or pretty strong painkillers. If not for the haunted look in her eyes she'd be an attractive girl—she had neat, very regular features, a flawless complexion, and rather nice eyes with lovely long eyelashes.

'Everything OK?' he asked quietly as the plane came to a halt and girl tried to jerk to her feet without undoing her seatbelt.

'Yes, of course,' she said, but her voice sounded artificially cheerful.

Her glossy, perfectly styled hair fell across her face and hid her expression as she bent to open the recalcitrant catch of her seatbelt. Finally getting it undone, she stood up and opened one of the overhead lockers, tugging valiantly at her bag. After watching her struggle for a few seconds, Neil got up to free it for her. She was taller than he'd thought, just half a head below his own imposing six-foot two inches. The flowery scent from her hair teased at his nostrils, and for a second their eyes met and held as he took the case out and handed it to her.

Shefali looked away first, flustered by her reaction to him. Perhaps she was going crazy, she thought, suddenly furious with herself. Pranav's betrayal was making her overly susceptible to the slightest bit of attention from any good-looking man. She tried to take a step away from him, but there was nowhere either of them could move—everyone in the plane was standing in the aisle, trying to get at their luggage, and the doors hadn't opened yet.

'Relax, I don't bite,' he said, sounding amused as he noticed her trying to move away.

Shefali flushed angrily. It was bad enough realising how pathetic she was without him noticing too. Luckily the doors opened just then, and she was able turn towards the exit.

'Here—let me take that,' he said, leaning down to take the handle of her case from her.

Relinquishing it, she followed him into the airport, her nose wrinkling just a little as she noticed how tiny it was.

Neil grinned at her reaction, Neil grinned. 'Doesn't match up to Delhi T3, does it?' he asked.

Refusing to be embarrassed any further, Shefali shrugged. 'It's quaint,' she said. 'Oh, look—my cases are here.'

Neil helped her get the bags off the carousel, his smoky blue eyes widening as he realised how many there were. 'Arctic expedition?' he asked, his brows quirking up.

'I'm moving here for work,' Shefali said stiffly. 'Two of the cartons are full of educational aids I'll need for my job.'

It had taken her days to pack, choosing between sentimental reminders of her growing-up years in Delhi and more practical things like dishes and clothes. And then her boss had landed her with the two cartons to carry, airily offering to pay for the extra baggage. The last thing she needed now was to be given grief for the amount of luggage she had. She eyed his mid-sized rucksack contemptuously—he was probably carrying clothes for a two-day trip, and she had her entire life in her bags.

Suddenly overcome by the enormity of what she was doing, she shoved her remaining bags onto the trolley and said gruffly, 'Well, thanks for everything. I guess you need to head off now.'

Looking slightly taken aback, Neil gestured towards the trolley groaning under the weight of three cases, two large cartons and a carryall. 'Are you sure you'll be able to manage that?'

'Perfectly sure,' Shefali said, dredging up a polite little smile, though her heart sank into her shoes at the thought of having to wrestle with all that stuff on her own. Then her sense of pride reasserted itself. She wasn't helpless. She'd be fine. She didn't need help from random strangers, however good-looking they were. 'Thanks again for your help,' she said, trying to sound as gracious as possible. 'I'm sure we'll see each other around, this is such a small place.'

'It has a population of over a million,' he said drily. 'But if we do run into each other I'll come across and say hello.'

Someone from the throng of people outside the airport yelled, 'Neil—over here!', and the man gave Shefali a brief nod before turning away.

Flushing, Shefali watched him stride off, his broad, athletic frame a stark contrast to the frankly pudgy man with a ponytail who'd greeted him exuberantly as soon as he'd stepped out.

He was nowhere in sight when Shefali finally managed to get her trolley out, but by then she had other things to worry about. The airport seemed to be in the middle of nowhere. Apart from a small car park there was nothing—trees and more trees surrounded the area, and there was not a cab in sight. Everyone else who'd got off the flight was being met by someone, and the couple of auto-rickshaw drivers who were hanging around looked as if they spent their spare time mugging little old ladies and stealing candy from kids.

She looked around a little helplessly—the man Neil was driving out of the airport in a black SUV, and she wished she'd asked him for a lift.

'Need a lift somewhere?'

Shefali turned to look into the concerned eyes of the motherly woman she'd been sitting next to at first. Shefali shook her head. The woman seemed nice enough, but she reminded her way too strongly of all the curious aunties back in Delhi, who'd been simultaneously horrified, pitying and excited at her wedding being called off.

In her hurry to get away Shefali beckoned to the least ruffianly-looking of the auto-rickshaw drivers and gave him the address of her hotel. The auto was cramped—her bags took up most of the back seat of the three-wheeler—and she had to sit to one side, almost falling out of the open vehicle as it zipped through almost deserted roads. For a while she tried to look out and interest herself in her surroundings, but then her shoulders slumped and she leaned back in the seat and closed her eyes. The first day of her new and independent life had been exhausting, to say the least.

HQN India Romance
By Harlequin Junkie Blog
In Secrets & Saris by Shoma Narayanan, jilted bride, Shefali moves to the country from the city to start her life afresh after facing so much humiliation. Her new life starts with a bang when she the local celeb Neil Mitra enters her life and she starts getting attracted. There is no way she can go into another relationship so soon after her latest mishap but surely a casual fling to forget about the wedding she did not have will not do any harm. But what happens when a casual fling becomes a serious one for both of them..??

Secrets & Saris by Shoma Narayanan is a beautifully written Indian contemporary romance. The setting of the novel and all the beautiful explanation about the most detailed thing got to me the most. The story started off well but it got messy halfway because lots of things were happening at a time which made it difficult to enjoy the story. The story also appears to drag at times because of the overdoing.

The characters were ok and without any striking feature that made them special however, some readers may find it difficult to understand the heroine and certain events in the story due to the cultural difference. The romance is steamy enough with enough good moments to be called one of the saving grace of the novel.

Overall Secrets and Saris is a good romance story but too many cooks(storylines) spoiled the broth(story) in this one. If you want to read a really good Indian romance then go for the author's previous works which are totally worth the read.

Deeper Than Expected
By E. A. Montgomery
Secrets & Saris surprised me by being having some fairly controversial content. Shefali Khanna is a recently jilted bride overseeing a child care center in a new town. Neil Mitra is a television personality with too much baggage to start a new relationship. This is a conventional start for Harlequin so I wasn’t prepared for where the story went. Narayanan bit off more than the page length allowed her to fully chew. The major conflict between Shefali and Neil involves children. She wants more and he feels the one he has is enough. Narayanan covers a wide amount of time, giving the characters time to explore and resolve their conflict but I still felt rushed.

Impatience of the Heart (Penguin Modern Classics), by Stefan Zweig

The great Austrian writer Stefan Zweig was a master anatomist of the deceitful heart, and Impatience of the Heart, the only novel he published during his lifetime, uncovers the seed of selfishness within even the finest of feelings.

Hofmiller, an Austro-Hungarian cavalry officer stationed at the edge of the empire, is invited to a party at the home of a rich local landowner, a world away from the dreary routine of the barracks. The surroundings are glamorous, wine flows freely, and the exhilarated young Hofmiller asks his host's lovely daughter for a dance, only to discover that sickness has left her painfully crippled. It is a minor blunder that will destroy his life, as pity and guilt gradually implicate him in a well-meaning but tragically wrongheaded plot to restore the unhappy invalid to health.

About the Author
Stefan Zweig (1881-1942) was an Austrian writer who, at the height of his fame in the 1920s and 30s, was one of the most famous authors in the world. Zweig was born into a wealthy Austrian-Jewish family in Vienna, where he attended school and university before continuing his studies on Berlin. A devotee of Hugo von Hoffmanstahl, he had published his first book of poetry by the age of 19. After taking a pacifist stance during the First World War he travelled widely and became an international bestseller with a string of hugely popular novellas including Letter from an Unknown Woman, Amok and Fear. He also developed friendships with great writers, thinkers and artists of the day, including Romain Rolland, Rainer Maria Rilke, Arturo Toscanini and, perhaps most importantly, Sigmund Freud, whose philosophy had a great influence on Zweig's work. In 1934, with the rise of Nazism, he moved to London. With the German occupation of France in 1940, Zweig, a committed pacifist and advocate of European integration, was devastated. "Europe is finished, our world destroyed," he wrote. Zweig and Lotte married and left Europe for New York, before finally settling in Petrpolis, Brazil, where in 1942 the couple were found dead in an apparent double suicide.

Searching for a reason to believe
By Karl Janssen
Barabbas, a novel by Swedish author Pr Lagerkvist, was published in 1950. The following year Lagerkvist was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, due in no small part to the critical acclaim this book received. The novel is based on the biblical story of Barabbas, who is briefly mentioned in each of the four Gospels. In the time of Christ, it was customary to pardon one prisoner during the holiday of Passover. The Roman prefect, Pontius Pilate, gives the people of Jerusalem the choice of whom to set free. They choose Barabbas, a convicted thief and murderer, leaving Jesus of Nazareth to be crucified.

Lagerkvist’s novel begins with the crucifixion of Christ. Barabbas, a free man, witnesses the event, and can hardly believe his good fortune at having escaped the fate of the man who is dying before him. He knows little about Christ or his teachings, but he finds the man strangely fascinating. Barabbas is tormented by the nagging thought that he should have been the one to die. He undergoes a drastic personality change, no longer enjoying wine, women, and theft as he used to. He seeks out information on Christ, and makes attempts to learn about the Christian faith, but he is not welcomed among the Christians. In many ways Barabbas is incapable of faith or religion. This is not a simple repentant-man-turns-over-a-new-leaf story, but something far more complex.

Having seen the 1961 film adaptation starring Anthony Quinn and Jack Palance, I approached the novel with some pre-conceived notions. Overall, the film is faithful to the general tone and message of the book, but it augments Barabbas’s interior conflict with sword-and-sandal action scenes designed to entertain. In the movie, Barabbas is trained to be a gladiator, but nothing like that occurs in the book. The Jack Palance character doesn’t even exist in Lagerkvist’s novel, and he wouldn’t really belong in it. If adapted for film today, Barabbas would be an introspective art-house indie film rather than an epic blockbuster.

What makes the novel so powerful is the fact that it can be appreciated from either a religious or secular perspective. Devout Christians will likely gravitate toward the novel’s examination of faith and find meaning in its underlying morality. Irreligious readers, however, can approach the book as a historical novel. Lagerkvist’s Jerusalem of two millennia ago is a free market of competing gods and prophets. Everyone is looking for something or someone to believe in and a sense of belonging. Rumors of Christ’s divinity and news of his death spread not like wildfire but in fits and starts, through second-hand testimony and overheard whispering in the streets. This is a far cry from the glorified depictions of early Christianity in romantic novels like Lew Wallace’s Ben-Hur or Henryk Sienkiewicz’s Quo Vadis. Lagerkvist doesn’t even take a stand on whether Christ was the divine son of God or just a wise philosopher punished for his revolutionary teachings. He leaves that for the reader to decide, and chooses instead to focus on the faith of the followers. Despite its biblical setting, Barabbas is a modernist, psychological novel that explores the sort of existential themes one might find in a work by Albert Camus. Barabbas’s quest can be seen as analogous to modern man searching for meaning in an empty life.

Barabbas is a brief book that can probably be read in its entirety in under two hours. Nevertheless, it is a great work of literature, filled with stark, moving scenes that will likely stick with this reader for a long time to come.

The Most Famous "Bit Player" in Literature
By Gio
Five otherwise divergent Gospel accounts of the Crucifixion -- those of Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, and Peter -- depict the scene in which the "crowd" clamors for the release of a thief/rioter named Barabbas rather than of Jesus of Nazareth. Pontius Pilate grants their choice, and we learn nothing more about this Barabbas, nothing about his prior life and nothing about his later fate. Lots of Biblical scholars, both Christian and Jewish, have challenged the historicity of the Barabbas scene, arguing that it was inserted and/or recast by those who copied and disseminated the Gospels in later centuries. One common argument is that Barabbas was actually "Jesus Barabbas", therefore that the predominantly Jewish crowd had clamored for the RELEASE of Jesus of Nazareth rather than his crucifixion. The name "Barabbas" is in fact plain Aramaic for "Son of the Father", which does sound suspiciously like "Son of God". But, by the magic of recorded sound, let's fly 16 centuries into the future, to the era of Heinrich Schtz and Johann Sebastian Bach, and listen to the plangent hoots of the "Jews" demanding the release of Barabbas and the death of Jesus. Yes, those few phrases from the Gospels, especially the Gospel of Matthew, played an odious role in the history of Christian anti-Semitism, being used insistently to label the Jews as "Christ-killers."

Pr Lagerkvist's short "gospel" of the non-Crucifixion of Barabbas is entirely a work of imagination; none of Lagerkvist's account of the later life of the pardoned criminal is based on historical sources. In Lagerkvist's tale, Barabbas is present at the crucifixion of the rabbi Jesus, a pitiful figure who could hardly be mistaken for any sort of saviour since he couldn't even save himself. Barabbas, however, is profoundly distressed by his unwitting role in the drama, and by the doubt that lurks in his mind over whether the man who died in his place might indeed have been more than a Man. He is unable to believe any such absurdity, yet he is also unable to dissociate himself from belief and believers. Lagerkvist's story has little to add or subtract from the issue of Jewish "guilt" for the Crucifixion; it's focused entirely on the dilemma of Barabbas's obsession with a "belief" he can't acknowledge. He was there, don't forget. He observed the transformation of simple material events into miracles, and rumors into gospel truths. He contributed, sometimes deliberately, to the codification of the Myth. His was the cynical lie about the Angel with the Flaming Sword who burst open the Tomb. Barabbas is the rational doubter, the man who can't lie to himself.

"Barabbas" has always been the most widely read of Lagerkvist's novels among anglophones, and its publication in 1951 coincided with the author's reception of the Nobel Prize for Literature. The later American film of Barabbas, with Anthony Quinn in the title role, certainly helped to popularize the book. But I think -- and pardon me for doing so -- that the ambiguity of "Barabbas" as a portrayal of spiritual/existential agony has also made the book more acceptable to a wider readership than Lagerkvist's earlier, harsher, more relentless depictions of human despair. The last thirty-some words of "Barabbas" are devastatingly ambiguous -- I won't quote them lest I spoil any reader's experience -- and can justifiably be interpreted as "redemptive" or as "nihilistic". If indeed Barabbas accepts belief in his dying moments, what does it mean? Belief in God, after all, is no proof of the Existence of God.

The Swedish word for 'strong' is "starka", and Barabbas is stark in both Swedish and English. Lagerkvist's style is spare. Lean and mean. Ruthlessly unadorned. This is not my own favorite of his books, but if you've never read him, it's probably the book to start with.

Tracing the footsteps of death
By Newton Ooi
This short novel by Scandinavian Nobel Prize winner Par Lagerkvist fills in a little hole left open by the Bible; specifically, what happens to Barabbas after the crowd chooses to crucify Jesus and spare his life. The book begins with Barabbas being freed. He is in a state of bewilderment, and something within him leads him to follow Christ to the cross, where he witnesses the death. Afterwards, he tries to pick up the pieces of his life and wanders through town. By coincidence, he encounters some of the 12 apostles at a small cafe without knowing who they are, though they know who he is. When he discovers their identities, he is somewhat drawn to them yet repulsed by their poorly-concealed anger. In quick succession, he witnesses the stoning of a female friend, works as a laborer on a wealthy estate, and travels to Rome. There he sees Rome burn down around him, discovers that this was done on orders of the emperor to be blamed on the Jews. He is captured along with some Jews (some of whom he recognizes from Golgotha) and killed.

The story is easy to read, yet delivers a very strong emotional impact. The different individuals Barabbas encounters are shown as very human, with faults and frailties that make the reader empathizes with them. The apostles that Barabbas meet are not Biblical heroes in any sense of the word, but grieving friends who wrench their hearts to try and not bear ill-will towards him. The various Roman soldiers and officials are shown as all too human; some cruel, some sympathetic towards the Jews and others apathetic.

The theme of death is pervasive throughout the book, as it starts with the death of Christ and ends with the death of Barabbas. Death seems to follow Barabbas at every step. He somehow feels this, but does not try to run; he has nowhere and noone to run to. Nearly all the people he meets end up dying; often at the hand of others. As such, the book not only portrays a man, but a society that places little value on life, less than that placed on money, law, order, revenge, honor, etc... Death is truly inescapable in the life of Barabbas, and he comes to realize near the end of the book that it is not how or when you die, but what you die for, something Christ tried to show him and everyone else at the beginning of the book.

In all, one of the best books by this Nobel Prize-winning author. This English translation is easy to understand; the story flows smoothly, the dialogue is simple, and human emotions are conveyed but with strength and subtlety. I highly recommend this book.

a lifesaver
By S. Beddo
While waiting for our adoptive daughter I thought my heart would break. Nothing and no one moved fast enough for me. A woman I never met understood my anguish as she had been through it herself. She sent me "Wait." I still think she was an angel. I clung to this book, memorized the poem, and thanked God for it. It truly did help me "wait" for my treasured Chinese daughter, and not just to wait but to have joy in the (often painful) waiting.
