Tim Waggoner is a novelist and college professor. His original novels include the Nekropolis series, Cross County, Darkness Wakes, Pandora Drive, and Like Death. His tie-in novels include The Lady Ruin series and the Blade of the Flame trilogy, both for Wizards of the Coast. He's also written fiction based on Supernatural, Stargate: SG-1, Doctor Who, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and others. He teaches composition and creative writing at Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio, and has a busy online presence in the fantasy fiction community.

Good horror/UF

Shadow Watch agents Audra and Jinx have returned in book 2 of the Shadow Watch series. Shut-eye, a new addictive and dangerous drug, has been smuggled into our world from Nod, the dreamland. Audra and Jinx are more than a match for the smugglers even though they have problems of their own, including training new recruits, dealing with Blending, and facing someone from their past.

I was eager to read this book because I had read and enjoyed the first in the series, Night Terrors. While the first book had a few minor issues, this book basically took care of most of them. Jax and Audra's relationship (work, not romantic) is smoother, the writing was more comfortable with itself, and the world-building continues to expand into a well-rounded universe. Waggoner's wit and humor are terrific, and the action is abundant. However, I still felt a little distant from Audra, and would have liked to be more sympathetic towards her, and I would have liked a little more non-work interaction between Audra and Jax.

I would recommend this book to people who like a bit darker urban fantasy, bordering on horror, but still with humor.

So strange, yet so satisfying

Review copy of Dream Stalkers - A Shadow Watch Novel

If you are looking for horror that is irreverent and totally off the wall, look no further than Dream Stalkers - A Shadow Watch Novel by Tim Waggoner.

It's been nearly a year since we first met Audra Hawthorne and her counterpart Jinx, so a quick review may be a good idea. Audra is an Ideator who dreamed up Jinx, an incubus who manifests as a clown. Together, they work for Shadow Watch, an organization tasked with keeping Earth, and it's counterpart Nod, safe.

Audra and Jinx have a contentious relationship which plays out with a lot of jabs and barbs, making for a fun read. Of course when it hits the fan these two always have each others back.

The storyline for Dream Stalkers finds a new drug on the market called Shuteye. Designed to allow a chemical simulation of sleep for Ideators and Incubi who don't sleep. The problem is the side effects, including psychotic behavior, going crazy after a single dose, and even death. What our heroes discover while trying to find the drugs suppliers could mean the end of the world as they know it. If you think that sounds overly dramatic, it's not. Actually it's more of an understatement.

There are moments of Earth-shattering violence, a bit of social commentary, as well as non-stop action. In the end, all of this insanity makes perfect sense, which actually scares the hell out of me. Here's my recommendation for reading Dream Stalkers, just check your disbelief at the door and enjoy the ride.

Nice character development for our protagonists.

After the events of Night Terrors, the Shadow Watch is on a massive recruitment drive with all agents actively mentoring new recruits. And our heroes Audra and her Incubus Jinx are currently trying to disassemble the drug ring behind Shut-eye, a dangerous drug meant to help Ideators simulate sleep with typically horrible side-effects. And given how Ideators like Audra don't sleep at all as part of their "gift", it's easy to understand why people give into the drug. Despite their best efforts, they've been unable to find any information about who is manufacturing the drug and thus they've decided to use the rookies Melody and Trauma Doll to try and lure the dealers to make an appearance.

But there are other events afoot in Nod as if the recent events with the Lords of Misrule hadn't been enough. Things seem to be changing bit by bit in rather subtle ways and only a few individuals like Audra are starting to notice it. And their investigation into the Shut-eye drug ring leads them on a path of personal significance as it involves reaching out to her former mentor's Ideator before he succumbed to the maddening effects of Shut-eye. To top it all off, religious factions in Nod seem to be particularly active for some reason as they preach their opposing views of their other-worldly existence.

Now it's nice to see Audra and Jinx working a lot better this time around. Yes, getting past their emotional issues was sort of a key moment in the first book and now we have them being a lot more effective as a team. Sure, their first case is a bit of a doozy and anyone would have a hard time with the forces they're facing, but they do their best. The whole Blending angle with the two of them potentially being too close to one another was an interesting addition to the mythos of the series and it did make for some interesting scenes for the pair.

The whole investigation started out well enough with our heroes going through a pretty methodical investigation that involves what you can only call good police work or something along those lines. And I was pretty engaged with things up until the whole prison scene. But from that point things seemed to ramp up in an awkward way, like when a movie director realizes he's invested too much time in the build-up and now needs to speed through the rest of the story somehow. In many places it felt messy and not quite as logical, as far as the angle of the mystery in this story is concerned.

And the ending was sort of big and flashy and yet didn't feel like it paid off well. The big bad villain was again someone who was presented as a random NPC early on and there were little to no clues that could lead the reader to believe this person should be a suspect. And while this isn't absolutely required, I admit I'm the sort of guy that appreciates good foreshadowing and for both Shadow Watch novels we haven't quite seen that from Waggoner.

At least the action was a lot better this time around and he's really developing a flair for describing the unique abilities of the various Incubi when in their Night Aspects. Those moments were rather well done this time around and I appreciated the work.

So on the whole Dream Stalkers is a book with a lot of great moments and good character segments but the overall plot and the central mystery fell a little short. But this may not be much of a problem given enough time as Waggoner gets to flesh out this world more and really think about what he wants to do with his characters long-term.

Madmen in authority, who hear voices in the air, are distilling their frenzy from some academic scribbler of a few years back.

The ideas, questions, issues, and problems that we study in International Political Economy (IPE) are increasingly important. It is hard to make sense of a newspaper, a business investment, or a government policy without an understanding of the theories, institutions, and relationships found in IPE. It is difficult, in other words, to understand our everyday lives without some understanding of IPE, so deeply are we now touched by international relations and global events.

We believe that IPE is so important that all college students need to understand it in a fundamental way. Our conviction is that it is possible to present this material in simple ways that retain the complexity of the global issues and intellectual problems we address, but without making the discussion fit only for graduate students. Our aim is to provide educational materials that will allow "beginners" (college freshmen and sophomores) to go from 0 to 60 in IPE in a single semester. Our hope is that these students will get excited about IPE as an element of lifelong learning and become better citizens and more knowledgeable individuals in the process. OUTLINE OF THE BOOK

The book begins with flue chapters designed to set out some basic tools for studying IPE. Chapter 1 introduces the fundamental elements of IPE. We will begin with relatively simple tools and ideas, then add layers and detail to make IPE real. Chapters 2, 3, and 4 explore three ways of looking at IPE that have been powerful forces in history and remain influential in today's world: mercantilism, liberalism, and marxism or structuralism. Chapter 5 introduces four theories (rational choice, feminist, green, and postmodern) that challenge our understanding some IPE questions and events.

The second section of the text examines the web of relationships or structures that tie nations and their citizens together. As a student sitting at your desk, you are linked to people and places around the world in a number of ways which you need to understand if you are to make good personal, business, and social choices. Chapter 6 looks at production and international trade. Chapter 7 looks at the monetary linkages that bind us together. Chapters 8, 9, and 10 examine, respectively, the debt connections, the security structure, and the ties created by knowledge and technology.

At the end of the first ten chapters, then, you should be able to imagine yourself as part of the international political economy and how you are linked to states and markets around the globe. You should have a fundamental understanding of what these linkages are, and an appreciation of the theories and perspectives that interpret these structures and guide our understanding of them.

The second half of the book looks at specific topics and problems in IPE that are essential to a sound understanding of the world today. Chapters 11 to 14 look at issues and events that are usually associated with the industrial nations of the North. We examine the European Union, the controversy over NAFTA, the IPE of Japan, and the problems of the formerly Communist countries making the transition to another form of political economy.

Problems and issues generally associated with the less developed countries of the South are discussed in chapters 15 to 17. These chapters look at the dilemma of Less Developed Countries (LDCs) and Newly Industrialized Countries (NICs), the nature of the multinational corporation, and the IPE of OPEC and oil.

Finally, the last three chapters examine global problems. The global environment and the food crisis are discussed. The very last chapter asks, "Where do we go from here?" After reviewing basic concepts and examining the fundamental tensions that shape today's world, we consider four scenarios for the future of IPE.

At the University of Puget Sound, where we teach, all of our students take a course in IPE, or something similar, in their sophomore year. We have written this text to help our students and to help ourselves serve their needs. We hope you find it a valuable educational resource. WHAT'S NEW IN THE SECOND EDITION?

The world has changed a lot since the first edition of this textbook appeared in 1996 and the second edition has been thoroughly revised to reflect the dynamic environment of IPE. We have retained the basic format that has proved so successful: a survey of theoretical perspectives followed by an analysis of structural connections, leading to sections that explore state-market tensions, North-South relations, and global problems. Within this structure, each chapter has been carefully revised. A few chapters have received major overhauls; all of them have been updated. Here is a list of the most significant changes.

Chapter 1 has been revised to make it a more user-friendly introduction to IPE for beginners (but not, as the popular how-to book series has it, for "dummies"). The U.S.-China case study has been retained and deepened somewhat. The notion of Waltz's three levels of analysis is introduced in this chapter to provide a basis for discussion in later chapters. Chapter 5 has been broadened significantly. In place of a chapter on rational choice theory, Michael Veseth has written a new chapter that surveys four theories that, depending upon your viewpoint either challenge or enrich the traditional study of IPE: rational choice, feminist, green, and postmodern theories. We want this chapter to serve as a point of entry for professors who want their students to study one or all of these theoretical perspectives without fundamentally changing the format and focus of the book. We hope that professors who wanted to be able to teach these theories as part of IPE will find this chapter's summaries useful and will supplement them with other readings and assignments. Dave Balaam has written an entirely new chapter 9 on the global security structure, uprooting the discussion from the previous focus on the Cold War and asking students to consider security as a dynamic and many-layered problem. Chapter 13's analysis of state-market tensions in Japan has been thoroughly revised by Karl Fields and Michael Veseth to reflect more clearly the political and economic crises that Japan has confronted in the 1990s. The focus of this chapter is now the model of the developmental state and the question of whether this system of state-market relations is still valid. The analysis of the transition from state to market by former communist countries has been strengthened through a revision authored by Patrick O'Neil, our colleague at Puget Sound, who joins the textbook team in the second edition. Professor O'Neil's revision adds detailed substance to the basic outline established in the first edition. Chapter 17's discussion of the IPE of energy and oil has also come in for a major revision. The focus of the chapter is now clearly on oil and the recent issues in the IPE of oil. Much of the historical analysis of the first edition chapter has been cut to make room for more recent events. "Where do we go from here?" We have revised chapter 20 to make it less U.S.-centric and to address more directly the questions and concerns that students have when they reach the end of a textbook like this. All the chapters have been revised to take into account a number of important IPE events, especially the growing discussion of and concern about economic globalization, the financial crises in Asia and elsewhere, and the advent of a single currency in Europe, the euro. Unfortunately for those of us who teach International Political Economy to undergraduates on a regular basis, most text books on the subject are either better suited to a graduate-level course, or are still mired in the past. I am grateful to David Balaam and Michael Veseth for providing a fresh, up to date, approach. I particularly like the fact that they cover basic theory as well as the modern structures of the international system. Perhaps most important to me (because I expect my students to acutally read their text) is that their book can not only be understood by undergrads, it is far less likely to be used as a sleep aid that any of its competitors.

Understanding the way things work.

I read this book during my course of IPE while studying an MBA. These book will really help students, financial advisors, CEO's, politicians and everyone involved in International Management to make better analysis and take better decisions. Some time people believes in a conspiracy and take events like a isolated things, the fact is that everything is related and the three major perspectives of the world are in constant conflict everyday. �The three major perspectives? Yes: The liberals and the free trade perspective, the nationalists and the structuralism or modern socialist. It also covers the green perspective (oriented to take care of the environment) . Balaam makes a very clear analysis and he doesn't take sides so you will understand the way thinks happen and the media and politicians will not cheat on you to push you to "take sides on poll's". Enjoy.

About the Author
Born in Portsmouth, NH in 1975, Lono has studied the occult since 1986, though feeling like he was born to it. His studies have caused him to explore the depths of nearly every religion. A solitary Pagan practitioner in his high school and early college years; he later became a member of an Alexandrian coven; during which time he awakened as a psychic vampire; and subsequently left shortly after. In the early nineties prior to graduating from Holliston High School, he was awarded The BSA Honor medal for saving a life (at considerable risk to self), and also became an Eagle Scout. In his college years Lono attended Fitchburg State College. During that time he helped found a short lived pagan alliance within the college. In 1997 he attended a semester at the University of Hawaii in Hilo; where he began studying the Hawaiian culture. It was during this time he met a man in Waipio Valley and began studying Kahuna lapa au, herbalism and shamanism. It was also during this later interval that Lono under tutelage began intensive study, and practice of Ceremonial magick. In 2002 he graduated college with a B.S in Communications Film/Television. Lono became the Owner of the Psyvamp Information Exchange in 2000. During which time he began teaching other psivamps (mostly in private). He is now the current owner of PsychicVampire.org founded in 2005. In late 2005 Lono became a member of the Voices of the Vampire Community or “VVC”. His goal is to teach tolerance, and bridge the gap between the pagan and vampire communities as well as the GLBT community. His literary influences include Jack Kerouac, Scott Cunningham, Ken Kesey, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, W.B. Yeats, Aleister Crowley, John Dee, and Hunter S. Thompson. Lono is a former CBS affiliate Master Control Operator, turned Producer, Software Engineer, a published Author, an Artist (Oil paint), and an accomplished Magus. He currently works as a Licensed Massage Therapist, certified in Swedish massage, Hot Stone Therapy, Reiki, Deep Tissue, Sacred Lomi (Hawaiian Temple Bodywork Style), Aromatherapy, and ETPS/E-Stim.

Good informationneeds proof reading

I found the information in this book very insightful and informing. I had to work past many of the grammatical errors and sentence structure to get through some of the information. His presentation of energy and its use is very much needed in this community. I personally would have liked more information on the energy and less on body language as there are many books out there on body language. The first part of the book got me very much interested in it. There is definately a need in the various communities instructing practitioners in the proper and effective use of hand gestures to produce effective sheilding and projecting energy. All this being said, I would gladly proof read his next book (which I am hoping he will write) for free because I think his contribution in this area is sorely needed.

Sadly disappointed. The information was standard and most of it was simply common sense. It did give me a few new shielding techniques which was nice but the portion on body language was greatly lacking.

"Until recently, Ghanaian historiography has focused on the Asante and other Akan states, but has neglected the so―called stateless societies. In this well―researched book, Allman (Univ. of Illinois) and Parker (Univ. of London) have undertaken to fill the gap by shedding light on the Talensi of northern Ghana. They examine the spread of an indigenous god, Tongnaab, from its base in the Tong Hills to the south, where it became Nana Tongo in the Gold Coast, and Anatinga in western Nigeria. The authors argue that this cross―cultural ritual exchange must be understood in the context of British colonialism and ! anti―colonial resistance in the increasingly competitive ritual market place of West Africa. The British ordered the destruction of the great fetish and, in 1925, recognized the Yanii bo'ar shrine as the official Tongnaab, thus misunderstanding the complexity of the ritual practice in the Tong Hills, where Tongnaab had multiple sites. Despite the paucity of archival documentation and the problems posed by oral sources, the authors have contributed to the understanding of the structural transformations and social history of some rural communities in northern Ghana under colonial rule. Jean Allman teaches African History and directs the Center for African Studies at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. She is editor of Fashioning Africa: Power and the Politics of Dress (IUP, 2004).

John Parker teaches African History at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. He is author of Making the Town: Ga State and Society in Early Colonial Accra.

This book is simply brilliant. It is very well researched and now a reference book in my library. It is simply a must have for anyone interested in the traditions of Ghana and West Africa as a whole. Excellent job done by the authors. I enjoyed reading every page of it. Valuable information throughout. A job well done!
