About the Author
Jack Levinis the Brudnick professor of sociology and criminology at Northeastern University, where he directs its Brudnick Center on Conflict and Violence. He has written numerous books and articles about hate and violence, has been featured in the New York Times, the Chicago Tribune, the Boston Globe, USA Today, and numerous radio and television news programs and talk shows. He lives in Boston, Massachusetts. Jack McDevitt is a leading academic expert on hate crimes in America. He directs the Institute for Research on Race and Justice at Northeastern University. An expert witness for a number of congressional panels on hate crimes, he lives in Massachusetts.

Just Don't Bother

This book is garbage, all of the information is ancient and irrelevant to an issue as enigmatic and shape-shifting depending on context, egos, identity, et cetera. I read this for a class and was thoroughly insulted by the content; it was as if Levin and McDervitt decided that research really just wasn't important anymore. While this book certainly doesn't claim to be scholarly work, it just isn't even worth the paper its printed on.

These two supposed "experts" are also flagrant apologists and their ignorance of structural violence, systemic oppression systems, intersecting identities, or even just transphobic violence is astonishing to say the least. You are better off reading Audrey Smedley's Race in North America and watching "Black and Gold."

Interesting read

Despite the fact I had to read this for my hate crimes class, I actually enjoyed it because of the interesting research behind hate crimes and cases studies that are presented. The chapters aren't too long and easy to comprehend. A recommended read not just for criminal justice or criminologist students, but for anyone interested in the subject of hate crimes.

After failing to obtain the obligatory release papers, the patient resigns himself to his fate as a permanent hospital resident. Except for the ending, this plot may strike a familiar chord to anyone who's ever had an extended hospital stay. In Shua's hands, however, it becomes a compelling political allegory in the tradition of Solzhenitsyn's Cancer Ward, though not so bleak. Shua, a popular, prolific author in her native Argentina, brilliantly exposes bureaucratic inefficiency and impersonality, and Argentine-literature specialist Foster has successfully rendered the black humor and satire of the work, though the pun of the Spanish original (I am patient as well as I am a patient) is lost. When a stress test in a hospital consists of scraping the old paint off the floor of the director's office, you might guess you are in an unusual hospital. Shua's mentally confused narrator-protagonist, however, is concentrating on more important things. He has his best photo of himself in his wallet so he can practice the correct expression. He likes visitors, but the most frequent one, his attractive cousin Pochi, is there primarily because she is having an affair with one of the doctors. The narrator enjoys the privilege of a private room, but he started out in the men's ward, Shua's picture of which is a masterful depiction of crowded-in beds, interminable card games, bad odors, and the best part--the song of welcome the patients all sing whenever a newcomer arrives. The narrator's thoughts about himself, the doctors, and the staff and his unquestioning acceptance of such things as having the bed from his apartment in the bathtub of his hospital room further demonstrate Shua's acute perceptiveness. Health care horrors

"Patient," by the Argentine writer Ana Maria Shua, is a surreal novel in which an unnamed first-person narrator checks into an unnamed hospital. He finds himself entangled in an authoritarian, bureaucratic nightmare. The novel has been translated into a stark English by David William Foster.
The novel's creepy, sometimes gruesome touches are oddly complemented by a current of ironic humor. Overall, the novel is strikingly similar in theme and tone to "Bedside Manners," by Luisa Valenzuela (another talented Argentine writer). If you're in the mood for a Kafkaesque satire, give "Patient" a read.

Good laugh, but made me think!

Guy has a slight problem and goes to hospital and can't get out. Being the wife of a doctor myself I really enjoyed this book but it had me thinking, too..

About the Author

Wolfgang Birkfellner studied theoretical physics at, and holds a Ph.D in medical physics from, the University of Vienna, Austria. Currently, he is heading the Digital Image Processing Laboratory at the Center for Biomedical Engineering and Physics at the Medical University of Vienna. He is also a reviewer and editorial board member for major journals in the field, program committee member for international conferences, and principal investigator for several third-party funded research projects. Previously, he served as senior researcher at the University Hospital Basel/Switzerland and associate professor of medical physics at the Center for Biomedical Engineering and Physics of Vienna Medical School.

fun for a plane trip

Took the kids on a long day flight and knew that I needed to keep them occupied. Fancy Nancy came to the rescue in this fun filled activity book. They needed some adult help to read instructions, but then would spend a lot of time working out the pages for themselves. A big success!

For Doodle Bugs

This is a great and fun book. My Grandaughter and I are real Fancy Nancy Fans. So got each of us one. So we can Doodle together. It is a really nice book and really makes the creative juices flow. Really makes you think and use your artistry. If your a follower of Fancy Nancy it is really fun. If your aren't then it will tickle your curiousity to read her wonderful and entertaining story books. They are a learning tool too. I read them to my Granddaughter and now she reads them to me. With us both having a book we worked on the same page and would see which each of us could come up with. Really a cute idea for making even a 66 year old use her imagination. What a wonderful excuse to be a little girl again. My Granddaughter needed no time to even think about it right to work. She used markers and I used pencils but crayola's would work to. Take time to enjoy your kids or your Grands and be a little girl in heart and mind again. Fancy Nancy is the perfect way.

Crystal G. Herman has been the Assistant Professor of Theatrical Costume Design at the University of Texas at El Paso since 2008. She received her MFA in Costume Design from The Ohio State University. She has designed costumes professionally for nationally recognized theatres such as the Utah Festival Opera Company and the Weston Playhouse in Vermont. Over the past twelve years Crystal has designed and constructed costumes for a variety of other theatres in the Southwest. Her research and teaching concentrate on costume design, costume rendering, costume history, millinery, and costume crafts.

Great action and character development in this engrossing short

I brought this short story on a whim because not only did I love the snappy dialogue in the sample, but I also liked the premise. I'm glad I listened to my whim - this is an exceptional short story with a well resolved plot-line and interesting characters. The action, which I won't go into depth because of the shortness of this story, takes place as a fighter squadron is tasked to clear away debris from the planet Freya as they prepare for the installation of a portal. On their way to Freya, the fighter squadron under Major Jaxon Tell Galad is retasked to a greater disaster unfolding around the planet Hera. What I thoroughly enjoyed about this short is the wonderful characterisations that Janet Edwards has drawn; the interaction between best friends Jaxon and Drago Tell Dramis is exceptional, particularly since this short is around 56 pages, and moves through brief glimpses of their shared experiences together from childhood to adulthood. As the story begins, Drago and Jaxon are at odds with each other because Drago has broken some of the complicated cultural mores of clans living in the Beta Sector - Jaxon endlessly insults Drago, while the latter takes it on the chin, having accepted he was in the wrong. I have to say the banter between both Jaxon, Drago and the rest of the squadron is a real pleasure and truly enjoyable to read - had me laughing in some places. Overall, Janet Edward's writing style keeps you engrossed in the story right to the very end - looking forward to reading more of this author's work in the future.
